Any outfitters on THF every hunt out of Hermosillo, Mexico in Sonora? I have been told they get some monster Desert Mulies out of this area. I am researching and thinking of going on a hunt there.

I know a couple of guys who have been but not sure with who though. They took some really great mule deer but the hunts are not cheap. This one of the outfitter one of the guys I know hunted with. He is pictured in the bottom photos. http://www.sonoradarkhorn.com/coues_white_tail_deer.html

Thanks stx for the info I know these hunts start at around $9k plus air, tips and getting your animal back but there are not many places to get big mulies like this anymore. I want to go next Jan, 2014.

The guy who went with that outfitter killed a Desert Bighorn with them also. There are a couple of outfitter that have good reputations also. The hunting can be very tough from what I have been told. You might research Alberta in the areas east and south of Calgary. I killed a 180 and a 192, a friend killed a 211, another friend killed a 232, and one guy missed a 220 that the outfitter Dad killed with one outfitter. My buddy went back last year with a new outfitter and they killed a 193 and 195. Outfitter booked 7 hunters with with four over 200" and those two buck. One guy chose to hold out for a monster and left empty handed. Hunts are priced a little cheaper.

Also research Western Kansas for the muzzleloader MD permits to hunt in late Sept. Hard to draw one but good success with high quality deer. I hunted last year but did not see a deer I liked on private land self-guided. Worst drought on record for the area also. They took a 233 gross in that area though.

Any names of the outfitters you used in Alberta? I love the Canadian Rockies. I have hunted Saskatchwen several times for both whitetail and elk.

What I can tell you is do a search for a listing of outfitter in Alberta. Key in on the south and east corner. You have to hunt with an outfitter. Some zones had limited tags for MD. The zones I hunted the outfitter only had 2 tags in one zone and 2 tags in another but he average 190 gross on his deer taken over a 10+ yr period. One zone had 3 outfitters only it he hunted. One guy had 24 permits another guy like 14 and this outfitter had 2. Landowners cannot lease their land for hunting- they give the outfitter or local hunter free access or deny him access. Find the outfitters with most acres of private land and then start calling their references. Most of those areas will be from rolling open farm land, to open range land, to dense river/drainages, to coulees to thick areas of silverwillows and aspens. Where I hunted in 2 zones the 2 times I went it was mostly open rolling rangeland/farmland or coulees. The deer do get big and can be hard to hunt in the open land till the rut starts. Rut for MD is around the end of the 3rd week in Nov. The first week of the season can be really good also. I know they now have a 2 week muzzleloader season at the end of Oct. It should be a great time to get a really big deer in the right area. When I hunted those zones were 3 day per week hunting zones by law. You could only hunt Thur, Fri and Sat. Some were 6 day with no Sunday. I think they have changed some of those to 6 zone. They could even be 7 day now. It was great since no one could hunt the deer for 4 days per week. Let them settle down.

Go to sonorahuntingandfishing.com I have hunted with them for the last four years. They averaged in the high 180's or low 190's last year. You will see more big deer than you ever have...
