This story goes back to 2010. I shot this deer at 270 yards right in the chest as he stood up from his bed on the last day of season. He raired back like a bucking bronc and fell on his back. He was still kicking and I was giving him time to expire. I was going to walk straight to him as he was in some thick scrub oaks. As I approached he got up and hauled butt. I took a couple of running shots but did not connect. We looked the rest of the evening. Came back the next day with a dog and looked for over 6 hours. Nothing Looked for buzzards and/or coyotes but couldn't ever find him. Today I found him about 800 yards from where I shot him right on the creek. Crazy part is......during our search for him in 2010 we were within 40-50 yards of him. Not a monster but definitely a close to a story that has haunted me for over a year. He was 6.5 yr old according to his jaw.

Glad you found him. What is your theory on shot placement? Do you think the the shot was off center - maybe ran one throught the shoulder socket? Maybe low in the brisket? Or maybe up in the neck, but again off center (not breaking the spine, but bleeding out later?) I am always intrigued by the relationship between shot placement and deer's reactions/travel distance, etc.

From the condition of the sheds it looks like he was actually in the water all that time. If there is water in a creek a wounded deer will jump right in. It seems that anytime a deer is wounded on our place they dive in the closest water.

Thanks guys.
He was actually 20-30 yards on the bank but the river does fluctuate and we got good rains last Spring so it is possible he spent some time under water.
I have always heard wounded deer/gut shot deer will head for water and that is why I looked hard on the creek in 2011. But to no avail I didn't find him.
I am not sure what took place on the shot placement. He took that bullet like a man I assure you. I felt like shot placement was spot on but evidentally not.
I have taken that shot since on 2 animals and both fell down DRT. No questions asked. So I must have been a bit off in my placement.
For sure he was a good management deer as well being 6.5 and a weak L side like he had.
Sucks I couldn't find him to eat him, but that is hunting. But I hate losing deer and wasting game.
