opinions please, should I get dew claws removed at 5 months for my lab? I will be getting her fixed, and I believe this should be a good time to get them removed since she will be under.

Definitely if she is going to be under anyway. Spaying a 5mo old is more controversial than the dew claws. wink

Izzy's were removed when she was a week or so old. Deuce still has his. They both hunt all types of cover and I have had no issues with either.

Now if your dog jumps up on you, those things are sharp.

She is a lab, and I thought this would be best so that she would not further injure herself getting in and out of the duck blinds, boats, etc.

Get back to us after you boot boot both dogs.

They have both been booted. Izzy (without claws) has been every year for 6 years. Deuce (with claws) has for two years.

I have always heard it is good to do it, but I haven't seen any problems with Deuce but he is a tank and knocks everything down in his way.

3 different vets told us to just have our lab's taken off while she was under getting spayed, but she was about 7 months old. Also there was something wrong with hers - they were just nubs and looked more likely to get snagged than a normal looking claw.

No. Mine use their's. They like nothing better than to get a stick hooked on one and then cross over and hook the other one with the other claw and give it a really good chewing.

You can remove them well before that. I got mine lab at 7 weeks old and his were already removed by the breeder.

Some believe front dew claws do provide stability for a dog during hard turns and do have structural connections as evidenced by the ability to move them.

Some front leg issues have been attributed to dew claw removal by some breeders. I believe their may even be a study.

That being said most are removed when weeks old. At 5 months, I would not remove them.
