Well trying for some more groceries this evening between Boerne and Sisterdale. Some axis have been crossing a big open field in evenings my friend says. Setup in full Ghillie in the middle of the field. Trying for a free range meat axis, but if one of the big boys I've seen comes by he's going down.

Feel awful exposed sitting in this field but the LO says he can't even see me.

Came out of creek, but on other side of fence. But he may come this way. Meat buck.

Two small axis does almost walked over me. Thought about taking em, but interested to see how close they would get - and I'm hoping that buck will show himself again. Twice the size of the does. But I may have missed my chance for backstrap by letting the doe go.

Well, had about a dozen axis playing around this morning. Too bad they were on the other side of the fence on the next ranch. frown

I need to get me a cow elk call and see if I call them over next time. smile

I had a few people tell me it will if you practice and trill it some. I dunno, I've never tried - but it's worth a shot. Frustrating to see so many so close but out of reach. Landowner says those in that field don't really come to his property except every once in a while.

Pretty sure this is the group I always hear bugling down by the creek. I think they skirt his property following the creek bottom. I know they are CLOSE when they start bugling. I'm wondering what would happen if a tooted the call as they pass by running the creek. Think a buck might get curious and step out to see whose calling?

I have rattled in 3 different axis bucks the first week of Dec over 24 hours period. One was a spike and two were 2-3 yr old hard horned bucks. They all walked in slowly and just suddenly appeared. I passed on the first 2 thinking it was a fluke but shot the 3rd one. This was in Kerr County.

i need to find a way to pull them outta the brush where I hunt.

right now the only tactic is to try and catch them crossing a road or going into the field to feed, but they are pretty nocturnal so they come into the field at last light and make shots difficult
