I posted this same post on another forum, but it remains to be seen what replies it will receive.
So, for the folks here in Texas ...

I joined a small quail lease this past season. Traditionally there have been 3 members, on ~750 acres, located SE of San Antonio. They've been leasing this property for many years, maybe 25 or 30; and when one guy had to give it up this past year, I was invited to take his spot, and I did.

Now the land owner has purchased an additional, adjoining, ~250 acres, so the lease is now ~ 1000 acres, made up mostly of pasture, fence lines, and some mesquite thickets.

I've been asked by the other 2 guys what we should suggest to the land owner, in order to enhance the lease for bobwhite quail.

I'd be interested to hear yall's thoughts.

One of the good things you can have done is to disc areas this time of year. The first plants likely to reemerge will be ragweed and croton. Quail love and need this stuff. They need brushy areas and grown up fencelines to loaf in, and escape and evade predators, and areas adjacent as above to come out and feed in.

Thanks Pointer. That's good stuff, and exactly what I was looking for. This is a small lease, family ranch sort-of-deal, and they are very nice folks.

To my dismay they began clearing cover from the fence lines this year, killing the cactus, etc.

I'd like to come up with ideas that would be beneficial for both cattle and quail.

Thanks again ...

Plant haygrazer for hay or cattle if there are quail anywhere near your lease they will come.

Quail hunting is like walking into, and out of a beautiful painting all day long. Gene Hill

Well, I've suggested the disking, leave some cactus and fence line cover, and passed along the links. I think the landowner is going to work with us, he seems to be a pretty good guy. One good thing from last year, he had one field planted with lovegrass, which I think will come back on it's own. Another good thing I found out today is that there may be some additional property available about 10 minutes away from our current lease.
Anyway, it'll be a place to take the dogs. Just glancing at the PDJ quail article thread ... I hope it aint over.
