Your right. All of our windmills on the Pitchfork have been replaced with solar powered electric pumps.

Pitchfork, Your right. All of our windmills on the Pitchfork have been replaced with solar powered electric pumps. I've been thinking about putting in a shallow well with a windmill, but $3500.00 to $400.00 price tag on the mill has be looking for something else. Do you have any information on brands, cost, GPH, of the solar powered electric pumps? Thanks

On the place we hunt in Pecos County they are shifting more and more to solar from those really old mills out there. Is the guy out on 140 towards Charlotte still have all the windmills around his farm house/barns?

There all different brands of them and some old wooden ones if I remember right. It would make a neat thread on here.

We still have one windmill on our place, the rest are electric now. This windmill didn't work for over 10 years & I wanted to fix it. So, we rebuilt the thing. Used compressor to blow out the casing, rebuilt the pump (new leathers all of that). Climbed up top & fixed the brake & lubed it up etc etc. Got it working great! I brought in a small water trough to pump into & the spill over feeds a small pond. It WORKED great for several months, & now it's not pumping. I don't know if I need to go deeper now or if crud screwed up the leathers? I'll find out as soon as I can get back down there & look at it.

we had one windmill up and working last summer before the leathers gave out...i got 2 others that are just reminders on how things used to get done....i do know of a ranch south of Rosston that had a working windmill feeding into a cement stock tank...finding those old wooden water troughs are even harder than finding working windmills
