Its been 8 yrs since I had a pup. Boy did I forget the constant attention. She's learning and will be 8 wks this weekend. Kennel is a good thing. When she gets tired, she just goes and gets in it, in another room. Potty training is on track, 95% there. Knows back door and stands there until you let her out. She also wants out just to play, IN THE RAIN. She will chase her toy when thrown, sometimes I get a half a** effort to bring it back. Give, has been learned when she wont let go of toy. Sit is progressing or she just backs down when she gets close, but I think we are understanding.

I was spoiled by my last girl. Fed her once in the morning and she was good until the next morning. Problem is, I dont remember when I was able to get this regimen started. We are eating 4 1/2 ounces in a.m & p.m. Hollers like hell around 2 to go outside and then goes right back to sleep. But 4:30 or 5 is a different question. I try not to feed her until 6 but hard to wait. I figure bladder is still too small to make it through the night although we did get 1 from 10- 5. I was in heaven that night.

Am I asking too much too soon. Trying not to correct too much other than the word NO. I found my patience level is less than it was 8 yrs ago. LOL. Thanks in advance.

We free-choice until they are about 10 weeks old, leaving food in the bowl all the time. From there, we make the transition to a twice-a-day feeding regiment, morning and evening. This will continue until they are 8-12 mos. old. At that point, we move to feeding once a day (evenings only).

Good luck with your new hunting partner!

My pup is now 18 mos. and is on once a day. When I got him he was a couple mos old already and I fed him twice a day 2 cups of puppy feed until he was a year old. Now I feed him in the evening around 6pm and he's a healthy 53lbs.

Our pups eat 3x's/day once transitioned to feed from the "nanny bar." Then, we supplement with goat's milk or all breed milk to soften feed until week 6 when we transition out. Between week 7 & 8 we transition from 3 to 2 meals per day so puppy buyers have the convenience of twice a day feeding.

All my dogs (all ages) eat 2x's per day. I myself would not enjoy only one meal per day, so I don't do that to my dogs.

I like Blue Buffalo Lamb & Oatmeal or Chicken & Brown Rice, though I've discovered that the antioxidants & fiber is too much for some pups and tends to soften stools.

You can find a lot of info by Googling Dog Foods. You will be surprised to find that quite a few of the dog foods sold in grocery stores is actually lacking in nutrition.
Read the label..if one of the primary ingredients is corn, you are paying for a lot of "filler" and not much else for good growth and overall health. Names that come to mind are Beneful and Pedigree.
A rule of thumb is that the premium foods sell for about a dollar per pound. Sounds expensive but you end up feeding less food and getting max benefit.
If you have a Tractor Supply store in your area, that's the place to shop for the good stuff..

A puppy that young should be fed twice a day. If she's getting hungry an hour or so before you want to feed her, then feed her! It settles her down and saves you from listening to her for an hour! ;-)
My dogs are all adults and I feed them twice a day, around 8am and then 6pm, though sometimes they get anxious and wild around 5-5:30, so we feed them early to settle them down. Nothing like happy quiet dogs with a full belly!

I agree with the above poster on reading the label of dog food! You'd be shocked how so many well known brands have crap in them....corn, by products etc. there's no real nutrition in that! I'd stay away from grocery store brands. Blue buffalo is good, though never worked well for my dogs. I've liked Natural Balance, Innova, Canidae and Fromm. Currently feeding Fromm, its a bit pricey but worth it and is reasonable if you only have one dog! Though Fromm and Canidae are hard to find as Petco/Petsmart does not carry it.

Good luck!
