Got a call from the neighbor today. He has a guy wants to clear cedar for free for the wood. Anyone experienced these deals? Property is only about 35 acres

Flat cut it or completly get rid of it? A lot will cut it down for the post. That leaves a mess. Had a neighbor let a guy do that. Ended up costing him more than if he had just gone ahead and dozed and burned it.

WOW, let him. I know they use a lot of it for mulch, in fact I bought a bag of shredded cedar mulch today for planting fruit trees. With the price of diesel and time involved I'd say do it. Don't let him push all the cedar though. deer like to hide in it.

Great thing about cedar is when you cut it, it dies. You don't have to spray the stump. I would just make sure he hauls off everything he cuts down.

working a tree farm last 8 years, no way i'd let him have it. if its a burden to you, set some ground rules...i.e.cut at or below ground level, take it all or put the brush pile in "X" location. sounds like a winner for him.

Had another neighbor do the same thing years ago. A cedar chopper cut all the posts and then cut the rest down. They did not stack and burn it. The small cedar came up in the mess and you could not get in to cut them. I went in later and dozed the whole mess up into piles. Would have been a lot better to have done that the first time.

All of this^^^^^^^^ It is worse to fix the problem after they have messed up. If not done right the first time you will not be able to keep the regrowth managed. There will be regrowth.

There will definitely be regrowth. We used to burn under controlled conditions, that really stopped the small stuff in it's tracks. The problem is my 51 YO ticker can't stand that sort of excitement these days. I was running around like a one legged man in an arse kickin' contest. Scary at times.

thanks for all the advice. thats why i like this forum. I would like some selective clearing but don't want to destroy habitat or wipe out all cover. What do you guys think? some deer seem to like open fields?

Deer for the most part prefer habitat edges. I was told many years ago that deer are comfortable around 70 yds from the edge of thick cover.

I was thinking of leaving the perimeter boarders alone and selectively clearing the interior. This will keep a good privacy screen from the fence lines/road, might stop a stray bullet, and leave a good habitat edge. Is this similiar to what you were talking about stxranchman?

Yes but I would try leave a good sanctuary area of bedding cover for deer to stay on your land. I would make some random openings (while leaving hardwood trees/browse) that were around 140 yds x 140 yds more or less if I could. Random clearings is what I was thinking with open connecting to thick while still using the lay of the land or contour. Without seeing your land or knowing anything about how the deer move on it now it is hard to say.

I just figured this wind would take out all the cedar like it did/is doing at my place today!

I just figured this wind would take out all the cedar like it did/is doing at my place today! It broke a few here yesterday. When we clear cedar here we try to leave strips about 50 yds. wide. Also try to leave strips of cover tied into each other so animals will always have cover to travel in plus the cleared areas to graze. Like Ranchman said it depends on how your property is situated as to how the best way is to clear parts of it.

I wouldn't do it.
We had a similar offer from a guy on a small property near blanco. Guy made a huge mess. He basically limbed all the trees for posts and left everything else. Stumps weren't even flush, most were at least a foot tall.
At the end of the day it was more work for us to clean up his mess than it would have been to just do it ourselves.

Everything stxranchman said.
Plus when my grandparent's place in Gatesville was cleared of 90% of the cedars the dang sumac took its place. I'd much rather have the cedar. And the deer hunting went to crap.
Now I've got to figure out the mot cost effective way to get rid of the sumac and keep it gone. I hate it! I see mucho spraying in the future.

Clear your own if you have access to a tractor with a FEL. My small tractor can take most cedars to 4", my bigger 2390 case (sold it) would take any ceder tree. Roots on cedars are shallow and fairly easy to push over, just get low enough so you dont break it of, but even then you can still get the root ball out easily.
A Skid steer with a root grubber will do it too.
This way you can clear it in no certain order leaving a higher amount of "edge", a meandering edge will give you much more edge-line than a str8 line.

I hunted near Hye for a while and a nearby ranch cleared all cedar and wondered where their deer went. Ranch I hunt now has some mature stands. Good grass underneath and deer love for bedding and during bad weather. Turkeys like it too. Last year during the breeding that is where they were.

Thanks again for all the great comments. This individual has done similar work on my neighbors land and the neighbor highly recommends him. I'm thinking it is worth talking to him and seeing if we can set some ground rules on what to cut , how to handle trimmings and stumps and we may can do business.

I'd insist on stump removal. I could handle piles of spoils, gives a place for rabbits and other critters to hang out, but the stups would have to go...if i was me anyhoo.
