UNTERSVILLE, Ala. (WAAY) - A proposed disaster emergency ordinance in Guntersville is causing controversy. The city council and mayor are considering a new ordinance that gives the city more power. Mayor Leigh Dollar says it would ensure a quick response in the event of a major disaster, like the April 27, 2011, tornadoes. But it would also give police officers more power. The ordinance states officers could disarm individuals, if necessary. http://www.waaytv.com/news/local/propose...1a4bcf6878.html
This cannot be fixed at the voting booth.. Wake Up You Morons!

Why not the reverse and deputise armed individuals? Seems to me that in a disaster they would want the extra people.

Water finds a way. Quote from the article: "Dollar says the proposal is just way to give officers more authority to protect themselves. "We are not trying to infringe upon anyone constitutional rights whatsoever. It's just to protect the workers working out there in a disaster," Dollar said." (end/quote) It appears the precedent has been set in Tuscaloosa, as she wants to model her ordinance after their's. So, I suppose she's saying " We'll suspend your rights temporarily when we see fit. It's not what you think." Lots of that happening nowadays. It'll be interesting if the people in Guntersville allow this to pass. I suspect they might, they put this genius where she is. Hope I'm wrong.

I wonder how its worded because a disaster can be pretty much anything. disaster [dɪˈzɑːstə] n 1. an occurrence that causes great distress or destruction 2. a thing, project, etc., that fails or has been ruined

Wording is to vague..specifically disarming might mean individuals carrying a weapon around in the open and off their premise, or could mean going house to house collecting everyones weapons..Won't stand the test of a Court review..DD

I wonder how its worded because a disaster can be pretty much anything. disaster [dɪˈzɑːstə] n 1. an occurrence that causes great distress or destruction 2. a thing, project, etc., that fails or has been ruined Based on those definitions, we should be able to disarm Obama's entire administration under this type of law.

The Constitution has been maligned, undermined and trampled on during this and previous administrations. The problem is that the "we the people" part of the equation are too apathetic to do something about the situation in most cases.
All to often I ask others if they've written or called their elected representatives, and all I get is a shrug and "I don't have time for that".
We saw the wolves at the door for years, and yet we did nothing. We embraced a public education system that outright advocates and teaches our children to help the collective, and to shun individual achievement and to be ashamed when they succeed. In most youth sports leagues, there are no longer winners or losers, and everyone receives a trophy. I am sorry to say, real life is just not that utopian. Just like in public school, there are just a few winners, and a whole lot of losers.
As Americans, we allowed those in the minority to let their voices and will overpower our own. The US socialist Norman Thomas was quoted as saying:
"The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism. But, under the name of ‘liberalism,’ they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened." -Norman Thomas, U.S. Socialist Party presidential candidate 1940, 1944 and 1948

They did it in New Orleans after Katrina....... Dont remember that and I was there two days after storm hit and stayed through clean up. I was on North shore. But at no time was that ever done. We would walk streets openly armed. And spoke to cops while we did it. They were thankful we were taking care of ourselves and alowing them to tend to other matters. Again this was on Northshore and New Orleans is the southshore, but.....

Really?
Fairfax, VA-After a three-year legal battle over the unconstitutional confiscation of lawfully owned firearms, the City of New Orleans has agreed to settle a law suit by the National Rifle Association (NRA). A permanent injunction has been issued against the city, Mayor Ray Nagin and current Police Chief Warren Riley. The Second Amendment Foundation assisted NRA in the legal battle against Mayor Ray Nagin and the City of New Orleans.
“Today’s outcome is an important victory for the citizens of New Orleans and the Second Amendment,” said Wayne LaPierre, NRA’s executive vice president. “We fought for three long years in a fundamental legal challenge to assert the inherent self-defense rights for law-abiding citizens, knowing the Constitution would prevail. Today it has prevailed and freedom has won.”
Judge Carl J. Barbier presided over the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana. Judge Barbier signed the permanent injuncation against the City of New Orleans. The city admitted the firearm confiscations carried out by Nagin and Riley were unconstitutional and illegal.
Under the terms of the injunction, Mayor Ray Nagin, Police Chief Warren Riley and any agents or employees of the City of New Orleans shall:
· cease and desist confiscating lawfully-possessed firearms from all citizens;
· make an aggressive attempt to return any and all firearms which may have been confiscated during the period August 29 to December 31, 2005;
· within one month of the settlement, post on the City website the procedure for the return of confiscated firearms. This notice must include an interactive form for those claiming firearms to fill out, resulting in timely transmission of the information to the appropriate official. All other information on claiming a firearm will also be included on the site.
· within one month of the settlement, the City must mail notices to all individuals who are identified on the property tags of firearms in the City’s possession which were confiscated during the aftermath of Katrina.
“On behalf of the lawful gun owners of New Orleans, NRA is pleased with this outcome,” said Chris W. Cox, NRA’s chief lobbyist. “We thank Judge Barbier for his leadership and constitutional scholarship in presiding over our lawsuit. NRA will continue to aid however we can in the full return of all the firearms confiscated by the City.”
