I am looking for a new iron skillet and do not know much about them, I am looking at buying a "Lodge" iron skillet unless anyone one has a recommendation of a quality brand.

If you see one stamped with "Wagner", jump on it.

Lodge has been great. I have a no name brand I have had trouble with which wasn't pre seasoned. Lodge is pre seasoned and makes all the difference.

start off with fatty foods Not sure what other kind of food goes into a iron skillet!! Well I know my favorite stuff to cook in cast iron is fatty meat, but if you cooked something like scrambled eggs in a brand new "pre-seasoned" Lodge it would take a sand blaster to clean it.

They say preseasoned but after trying one I seasoned the rest in the oven coated with grease, the rest of that set worked a lot better after that.

I have several that I cook with some new some old. The best one is one I found half burried in the sand at our ranch when we bought it. I took a grinder with a whire wheel on it to get the rust of then poored some vegi oil in the bottom and let it sit there for a couple days then whiped the hole thing down and seasoned it. I cook with it rinse it and whipe the bottom with vegi oil and it is like a nonstick pan.
The rest of them I have are not like that even treating them the same they will stick.
It's hell eatin em live

Lodge is OK, Wagner is better, but look around at flee markets, garage sales, etc. and find the best, a Griswold. If they are crusted up, then have them bead blasted and re-seasoned. The finish on the Griswold is the best there is.

Well ya made me go an look. No identification on the old black skillet. I dunno what it is but my momma gave it to me and her momma gave it to her. VERY well seasoned.....makes the best bacon and eggs totally non-stick. Must be at least 70 years old.

Griswold are the best by a wide margin. Far too expensive for the average person. I inherited this set ~
