For those that own a versatile dog how does it know what animal you are after at the time? For example you want to squirrel hunt or search a blood trail or something. What keeps him from just looking for birds?

They will even get confused from bumpers to birds, dove to ducks, etc. I always let the dog smell and/or retrieve what we're going for, right up front. So, if it's teal season and pup's been training with bumpers, let it retrieve a teal before the hunt. That means, plan ahead and save a few frozen birds from the previous season and plan to use them for a pre-season tune-up.

The first few times they will be confused. They are pretty quick to pick up on the game. For blood trailing, most put a harness on the dog and they know by that what they need to do. First time I took one snipe hunting - I shot one, I picked it up, threw it for her to retrieve. She smelled it and from then on she knew what was expected.

or something? Blood trailing and hunting squirrels are two different task that require different mind sets.

Unless you trash break, while on an upland hunt your dog will go after the scent of a rabbit, skunk, hog, cats etc. You'll be able to tell after spending sometime with your dog that they are after something other than birds and can call them off after some training. Thats part of having a versatile dog. Why not just get a pointer/setter if you only want to hunt birds?

Clearly they are two different tasks which is the point of this post and I don't want to hunt only birds which is why I got a versatile dog in the first place...

You have a Vizsla cbump. With my older Vizsla, I can usually tell for example if she has started stalking a hog when I am rabbit and squirrel hunting or vise versa trailing a rabbit. I would make that Awwwaahk sound, leave it, go on, whistle her in, whatever to pull her off the off target, then send her in another direction and keep hunting. But not in a scolding way if that makes sense. She can usually read me and figure out what I am wanting of her in short time and adjust, and I can usually read her body language to know what is going on with her.

There will be times of confusion with that kind of dog. Like a time I saw a cripped pheasant drop into a spot of cover in a cut field. I heeled Blaze walked her to it, sent her in, and she went on point. Simultaniously a Rooster came up and a Rabbit ran out. I shot the pheasant. She only saw the rabbit so went for the rabbit when I called for the fetch. She did nothing wrong, but I had to whistle her in to look for the pheasant.

I haven't had a problem with them being confused. We can duck/goose hunt in the morning, and upland hunt in the evening.
They will point quail while dove hunting but I don't see that as a problem. I don't do any tracking with them but can squirrel hunt. Cash even knows what the word squirrel means, and will start searching the trees if I say it.

Shopping with your husband is like hunting with the game warden.
Experience is what you get, when you didn't get what you wanted.

That is cool. My wife's dad (non hunter) has a lab that you can say squirrel to and it will do that. One tree it can climb up and check for squirrels.
My grandpa goes to Arkansas every year for a squirrel hunt so we'd like Blue to learn so we can take him.
