Louisiana has always had some strange laws concerning wild game. For instance, if you bring you deer to a butcher, they can't process traditional meets (steak, porkchops, poultry, etc) in the same shop.

Now before you get all excited, just keep in mind, the law that says they can't use donated game was probably passed because some meat lobbyist got a law passed. This way the organizations that prepare food for the homeless have to buy it from them.

If this was true at one time, I do not think it is still true. I take my game to a shop in Sulphur, LA that is one of the best meat markets I've used. They have awesome boneless, stuffed chicken and good briskets.

Damn shame that hunters donated the meat and some fruit loop lame arse deprived not only the homeless of the BEST organic protein source available but greatly angered hunters who went to the effort and expense to donate the meat. Guess wanton waste of game doesn't apply to the guilty parties involved.

Ah, but see if the meat is provided to them though a public establishment, it falls under food law. It isn't about whether the people are homeless or not, the meat is covered by food laws. That is why you don't see hunters selling their meat at the local BBQ shops either.

Sad that we have an abundance of food and an abundance of hungry people, but also an abundance of law-makers intent on ascerting themselves just to find a way to keep them apart. That's a by-God Greek Tragedy ready for the writing right there.

This story really pissed me off. Can't believe they wouldn't at least give the meat back.

I used to bone out a couple deer every year and take the meat downtown to the Salvation Army homeless shelter which had a full kitchen with meat grinders and the whole nine yards with plenty of help milling around.
Did that for years until four years or so ago they told me I couldn't donate the meat unless it was processed by a meat processor.
Sadly they were grateful when they saw me coming all those years and gladly helped me unload the meat.
We have too many do gooders in this country nowdays that love regulations.

Pretty sad, but the guy that said it was probably somebody that sells food to the gov that lobbied for the law had it right IMO.
