I hope everyone had as good of a closer as we did. After a few days of rain the dogs could really smell Saturday morning. The dogs locked up not even 100 yards from the truck on a 15+ bird covey and that ended up being the first of 3 covies on our quick 2 hour hunt. It's nice when the stars line up and a hunt goes that good. [img:left]http:// [/img] The one picture I managed to get of the dogs on a single

I wasn't carrying a gun so I could focus on handling my pup, but I believe there was a total of 4 birds dropped.

This hunt was in NW Wichita county. We weren't covered up in birds, but I'll take 3 covies any day.

Thank you for posting. We all like seeing dogs on point.
Shopping with your husband is like hunting with the game warden. Experience is what you get, when you didn't get what you wanted.

Are your birds wild? If so, and you have a recall on your dog, why do you have a checkcord on her? I am just curious.....

Texas Shag- yes, these were all wild birds. I have been running her with a check cord because I don't want her to retrieve any birds at this point. Wiith her not being 100% staunch on point, I purely do it just to extend my reach that much further. Insurance if you will.

I got ya. I just figured if you weren't rewarding her with a dead bird (since you are worried about her hard mouthdestroying the bird) why put the checkcord on her. Just dont shoot the birds and let her chase until she learns that she cant catch that bird. at that point she will really break herself with no pressure, the ideal way to break a dog.
You are lucky to have wild birds, thats the only reason I asked.

No doubt that not shooting would have been best, but being the last weekend the guys I was with were looking for a few birds to eat. She doesn't give much chase anymore, she's more interested in looking for downed birds.
