I was talking to a farmer out near Plainview the other day and he started saying how the area used to have elk. I figured no way that's possible so I did a little research. Well one thing led to another and I never really found out the answer to my question, but did see some people mentioning Elephant Mountain as having some elk. That really got me going, still currently doing some research, but i'm thinking about maybe trying to head up there for a hunt. Elk are considered non-game animals if i'm not mistaken, which mean no season or bag limit, correct? If that's true, the next thing i'd need to know is when elk lose their velvet? Would a summer hunt be possible and within the guidelines of public hunting up there? I'm up for an adventure and I know I have some buddies who would be down. Seems to me like it could be a pretty fun time. I'm looking for any kind of input here! Heck maybe even the Big Bend WMA would be possible? Thanks guys.

I don't think elk lose their velvet until Sept/Oct. Better check on hunting restrictions if you're considering public land. Just because it's public doesn't necessarily mean that it's open to hunting. Good luck.

That's what I was worried about but the laws I have seen so far seem pretty vague. Was hoping someone might know, but I might have to give the GW a call

I'm not 100% positive (more like 90%) but I'm pretty sure hunting out there is by the draw system only. I'd LOVE to be wrong about that.

I think Don is correct. I'm pretty sure you have to submit for a specific hunt on that specific site through TPWD's website. Then if you're drawn you can hunt the species that you were drawn to hunt and nothing else.

Elk were restocked a few years ago and actually had a season for them for a few years. Now they do not have a season on them and are considered an exotic. The herd size and range is growing annually. Most of the larger herds are on private ranches in the Alpine/Marfa area. Some ranches like them and manage them. Other ranches do not care for them at all. Most of the state WMA's have draw only hunts. Some give you free run on killing exotics(that is what the elk is considered now)as you want. Some have exotic only hunts also. Aoudad will be the most common exotic in West Texas with elk running second now out in the area.

Go to TP&W site, then public hunting areas, they state if animal not listed for that public hunt area then it cannot be taken. I couldn't find anywhere listed for Elephant Mt that exotics could be hunted, looked like the only allowed species were dove, quail, and rabbits. Good luck but don't believe it is allowed. Usually our public hunting sounds good on paper....

I remember when an elk was shot (poached) in the canyons around Floydada about 10 years ago. The landowners knew it was there, but word got out and someone killed it for the trophy mount. Poachers got caught because they couldn't keep it a secret and someone turned them in to the GW.

There have been several discussions on elk in that part of Texas on here, mostly in the exotics section. Most of the elk in that area are on private land and like STX said some land owners like them while others do not. The public places in that area are on draw like the others have said and good luck finding a place to shoot elk and getting drawn for it.

As to when they shed velvet this thread might help on that.

http://www.texashuntingforum.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/2547882/4

On a hunt south of Van Horn the first day most of the bulls were in velvet August 27, on the 28th some of the bulls were out of velvet and by the 29th almost all were out of velvet.
