Again, overall the work is well done, just don't like the head being straight up

Next time help your taxidermist by giving a reference picture of how you want the bird. This will help you not get one with the head to straight. I only do a few birds for friends and family but require that they email me a pic from google images or pbase.

I gave them this picture as a reference. Fairly close, just didn't look at the head too closely I guess.

Don't know if it's the lighting.... but there is a world of difference in those two mounts, not just the head
I'd ask him if he's pregnant. He missed a s__tload of periods. I'll take "things that look like a uterus" for $200 Alex.

Todd Huffman is one of the best in the country if not in the world. Taking a picture of one of his mounts to someone that really doesn't know what they're doing is kind of unfair.

Don't know if it's the lighting.... but there is a world of difference in those two mounts, not just the head Head, Neck, wing placement, wing sag, foot placement, shrivel feet, Belli skin sagging, the black vnotch on the front chest, and several other things. While this Mountis a good mount it's far from a great amount. The details I just looked above are what make a great amount. Keep in mind though if you want one of Todd's mounts they don't come cheap. I'm guessing that the guy that did yours is probably fairly new at it, has pretty good potential, but just has a lot to learn.

I'm sure it's the lighting, backdrop, and camera quality that make mine look a little off. But you're definitely right, Todd does amazing work. I was just using the picture as a reference for how I wanted it placed. This is a new taxi for me that I was just trying out. My regular taxi does some better work but his turnaround time is close to a year. This guy was done in a month. May try one more bird and give him a pintail to see if a different pose looks any better. This will be my 2nd pintail t mount so if that bird doesn't look too good either then it's onto another taxi

The great bird taxidermist are busy. Here's three one of friends just finished. He's back logged 18 mos doing 4 a day. In all fairness to your new guy that's a tough pose. Requires some advanced knowledge of anatomy and wiring to let feet and wings go where they need to without pulling on the skin.

That mount looks great. And that's good to know. The next one I'm going to let him try is a standing mount. Is that a complex mount as well?

Standard standing mounts are fairly simple. As long as you don't get any kind of low head resting positions. Those require body and neck modifications get them right.

Why do most standing ducks have one foot "up". I've seen them stand on one foot, but the other was in it's feathers where you couldn't see it

Not sure either, but that's a great looking pintail. I'm just making a guess but I don't think your new guy has the skills/ experience to make a bird look like that. That's a top 99% bird. What's your guy charging?

Hey, anyone remember that redhead mount we saw on here a few years back?
The good ol "stump dump"
redhead mounted on driftwood looked like he was dropping a big nasty.
LMAO!

He's charging $175. Some guys in the taxidermy sectioned referred Brandon zahn out of Wharton. He charges $280 if I remember right but his work looks really good. Might have to give him a shot. I've got 5 in the freezer so I don't have a problem trying out different people and see who's best

I've seen Brandon's birds in a couple competitions. Unreal! Worth the 100$. Trust me, there's no comparison. I consider myself pretty good as a garage shop amateur but brandon does work I'd pay for. At least what I saw in the show.

Sorry if I'm being 'that' guy, but the only thing that matched in that photo was the color of the wood.
Is this guy out of Humble? If so, he has no photos in his website. I wouldn't have given him the first bird without seeing his work, much less give him a second bird to "see if a different pose looks any better".
Everyone has to learn somewhere, is a very true statement, but they don't learn on my dime...
It's a decent mount that looks like it's worth $175. But, I would pay more and be willing to wait for higher quality.

Be that guy all you want. I put the photo on here for both positive/negative criticism. And I stopped by the shop before dropping the bird off and the work he had looked pretty decent so I gave him a try. That's why I gave him a redhead that I know I can kill any day of the season and get another mountable one. Bit after hearing what brazosboy had to say I won't be giving him a second bird. The taxi I've always used has done good work, I can post pics of his work later. I just wasn't happy with the nearly year long turnaround. Maybe I'm asking too much?

I like a readhead mount to have the bird "ripping-in" like they do when they come barreling into the spread on the coast.
