To clarify, you could buy pen raised birds to be mounted (or already mounted with papers proving they were pen raised). You cannot buy shot/wild waterfowl no matter what. If truly interested in buying pen raised birds they are available, most taxidermists will be able to obtain them, but it will cost a good deal of money. Figure mount cost + bird + habitat, could be $400-500 for a quality mount.

Cheaper/better option, wait until next duck season and shoot some smile

Also heard if you drive back roads in Texas, you can find birds that have been dumped lately. Or go to your local lake and wait for the poachers to stop shooting. Once they leave, pick up the dead floaters they left behind.

You can't sell taxidermy, but you can sell the plaques and stuff. If a bird comes with it, it is a bonus. That is how most people get around that law. Is it an "iffy" proposition, yes. But, so is planting millet or milo next to a pond that you don't intend to harvest.

The laws regulating this date back to a time when market hunting had to be ended. Would it destroy duck populations if someone could sell a mount? No. But unfourtunatley for those who may try the potential punishment sure makes it look like the offender wiped out half the duck population.

Doing 80 in a 75 is an "iffy" proposition with minimum consequence if the law doesn't agree.

Selling or buying a waterfowl mount on a technicality carries much higher consequences.

Someone may gift you a bird mount though I doubt it would be very high quality. Ebay was mentioned, some of the work is good, 90% of what I have seen on it is terrible...

Had it been a local taxi that posted that picture on this website he would have gotten lots of wonderful reviews. I have seen much worse on THF over the last few months.

I hesitate to post this because I don't want it to be taken the wrong way but as one of the aforementioned taxis I do want to mention one thing. I understand that not every piece is world class, a good taxi will work hard to get better and should always appreciate critiques. The best taxi's in the world did not get there through complacency or by falling in love with their own work.

That being said, I think it is great for people to be nice when commenting on people's work on here simply because the client may also be viewing the post and would certainly be disheartened by internet critics. If it looks terrible, send them a PM with suggestions, I think most would appreciate that. I was recently critiqued on a mount I posted and I had to step back and re-evaluate and adjust the mount. Pride is certainly the enemy of any artist.

There are many top tier taxis and even more of us trying to reach that level. For those who do this as a business though, the only critic that really matters at the end is the client.

Again, just wanted to say I appreciate those who comment and thank duckiller for not calling individuals out. Seems like things can get crazy on THF pretty quick grin

There have been some guys that have been hammered for this. Not a penny more than the plaque cost.

Gotten to where I never comment on other people's work. The biggest issue I see with a lot of taxidermists is just not using reference. I see a lot of mounts that are just terrible and you can tell no reference was used or else feet would not be hanging wings would not be hanging and heads would not be straight out.

I was at a friends house the other night who let me learn on his birds. These are birds a good 10 years ago and was just almost embarrassed by how bad they look, so yes everyone starts somewhere.

I agree about commenting, I know there are tons of bird taxis (you included smile ) that are far better than I yet I see many and think "do they really think that looks like a duck?" But It's not my place to say, I figure the quickest way to lose business for myself would be by bashing others work. For me, I am only a harsh critic on myself.

Reference does seem to be the biggest factor in quality vs. 'ehhh' work. For me I know the key was learning what I needed to do to match that reference. Learning anatomy, feather tracts, etc. and being able to break down reference. That all being said, I'm still very new and learning a lot daily.

As for interesting, well we could kill time talking about some guide. Temp or something? aim

As with anything on a public forum, if you post a photo of your work, whether it's taxidermy, photography, guiding photos, etc., you better have thick skin. If not, don't post.
