I try not to shoot without anything in front of the animal such as brush but have had to take a couple of shots through broom weeds and other tall grasses and the vmaxes won't put an animal down. It has worked before in the past but this season it won't work. Any thoughts? Shooting a 22-250 if that helps.

You need a bullet that will stay together........velocity and thin jackets are not your friends if there is anything in the way (and the bullet is doing what it's designed to do). Try loading something heavier or slower.
I live right around the corner from you in Tolar. Shoot me a PM and I'll load something for you to try!

Confused, are you missing the animal (which is a ??) or hitting it and not DRT?

I hope I am not speaking out of turn here.......
The broom grass is terrible this year out here and at his velocity I bet the bullets are coming apart shooting through it.
It's basically a case of bad angle (probably he's down in the grass himself), thin skinned, high velocity projectile and obstructions in the path of bullet flight.
This is the reason a 45-70 busts brush so well and high velocity cartridges won't.
I have used Berger target bullets HPBT in the 22-250 and 22 Swift to overcome this a bit. They group better than FMJ and still open up at 3400 fps.

Yeah shooting off a high rack and shooting towards an animal in taller stuff I feel like the bullets are just blowing up in the grass which didn't happen is hunts and years past. Easy shots less than 100yards just taller grass than what I like to shoot in but it always seems that it's shoot then or the animal is about to book it out of there. Gun is dead on even shot it at night to make sure its still on and its a tack driver so i can only think its the vmaxes. Thanks buckoff I will shoot you a pm when I get back home.
