Where do you start? Are there companies that specialize in it? Looking at something around 3/4 of an acre and would want to stock with bass, crappie, and pearch.

Any clues on what that should run me... Just trying to get a ruff idea. Thx!

Lots of good advise on the Texas Fishing Forum and the Pond Boss Forum. TFF is obviously oriented toward our area where PB covers the whole country but I have gotten more info from PB. I would think it over about crappie in that small of a pond. Not recommended.

Talk to your county extension agent or local NRCS office for help. Used to be programs to help cost share if funds were available. But you had to build it to there specs.

You can rent a D6 for $1800 to $2400 a week and do it yourself. Just throwing out some figures to think about. You can hire someone that knows what their doing and probably save money.

Go to the Pond Boss Forum. Lots of difference in damming up a gully to water cows and making a home for fish. You get one chance to do it right. Do your research.

Don't put Crappie in a small pond. They spawn earlier than bass and will eat up the fingerlings. Over time you'll have nothing but small, stunted, yet numerous Crappie.

I'll 2nd or 3rd Pondboss, also 2nd not putting in Crappie.

Use your yellow pages or word of mouth at the town or feed supply near your property, there are quite a few guys that build ponds in this country (N Texas). You could also post where the property is located and someone here may have a reference for you.

Going to pondboss and reading, will give you the right questions you will need to ask whomever your considering building your tamk.

As far as fish, I would only consider Coppernose bluegill, Black Bass and maybe some channel cat (flat head minnows are a given). Coppernose blue gill are prolific breeders, but dont eat as much (in a nutshell) Crappie are prolific breeders and feeders.

I would ask the NRCS agent in that area for help since they will know the soil types and how they hold water. They can help you with drainage acreage you need for you pond size, pond size for the drainage you have selected, soil perc test, names of reputable construction companies, etc. Pond Boss is a great source also for getting help.

When you get to the stocking stage, avoid the "fish trucks" that make the rounds of the feed stores. There are several good sources of fish in your part of the state and they will do you a good job. I restocked two ponds after we finally got rain last year. The pond that I stocked from Arms was very successful. The smaller one acre "fish truck" pond was a bust. Restocking in April.

Sounds good, there is a lot more to it than just digging a hole. I also have a stocking company I deal with that I will be happy to get you in touch with.
We are close enough that I can take you by a few I have done around our area.
Talk to you soon, Kent

What is it about fish trucks?

Sometimes the fish trucks are OK and other times they are not. It depends on a couple of things. The first is how long they have been in the vats. If they've been riding around for a couple of days, they will likely not be in good shape. If they've just left the "hatchery", they are probably OK.

A lot of people depend on the driver for advice. His job is to sell the fish and get back for another load. I have seen drivers give advice that could be ruinous.

We go through the County Agent. Thet usually have a truck that comes here a couple of times a year. You put in an order of what you want and pick them up when they get here. They put the fish in a plastic bag with oxygen then in a feed sack. Always seemed to be OK. I would first worry about getting a pond with water that holds. Around here it would not matter if it held or not because we don't get any rain for it to catch.

Same here. the County Agent and the USDA office work with an area fish hatchery to deliver pre-ordered fingerlings to a central location. They use the same hatchery that I deal with.
