What do yall think about using blocks I can buy a lot of blocks for what a feeder cost, will they get as much good out of them or should I go with the pellets

We put out some mineral blocks at several feeders and they barely get touched. I know part of it is just the area and what the deer like so it could be just a toss up.

Last summer I dropped 3 blocks out at my land near Rocksprings & the next morning all 3 were gone. I couldn't believe it, but looking at the trail cam pics the darn hogs destroyed them. All gone, one night. That was $25 bucks gone in a flash.

I have put a few out just to see how they take to them and the deer will eat the heck out of them, But thinking of building feeder pens and put 3 or 4 blocks in each one if you would get the same results as feeding free choice pellets, we don't have hogs but I think a hungry cow would eat one like a lollie pop!!

Protein blocks will not work at all around hogs or cattle. They cost more per ton than deer pellets when you put a pencil to them.

I know the cost is more pound per pound but you don't get the waste and you can buy a pallet of them for what a quality feeder cost, just wondering if you can get the same results as far as horn growth with the blocks. I have fed the pellets with great results but have also lost a lot of feed to wet and just getting walked in the mud and so on. I was thinking of building really big pens and spreading the blocks out so more deer could feed instead of 1 or 2 deer controlling the feeder, thanks for any more replies

If rain is an issue with pellets then it will still soften and melt the blocks. I would invest in a pen to keep hogs off the feeder no matter what I did. You can also build a block feeder out of a piece of rebar driven into the ground. Then drill a hole thru each block and slide them over the rebar. Having them available all the time with no hogs or cattle around will allow deer to eat them when they want or need them.

I have the P.F. blocks that are made in Seally out year around for the goats. Deer lick on them as well as the goats. Has not hurt them and I guess if they lick them it must be doing some good. They are not actually a protein block but more of a molasis type block.
