Went out to the new property today with my extremely pregnant wife and 3-yr-old son. We walked through the woods a few hundred yards to get to the creek/canal that borders our property. This particular creek is pretty deep and has very steep banks. It took me about 2 seconds of watching my dog longingly staring at the water to know he was going to launch himself off the bank and into the water.

Which he did.

After swimming around for a few minutes, he decided to get back out. One, small problem: The banks basically drop strait down about 2-3 feet towards the bottom and my dog couldn't get out. He clumsily jumped over and over and over, but just kept falling back into the water. Eventually, I caught his collar and yanked him up, at which point he runs strait up the steep bank to my wife and son, and then shakes vigorously, completely soaking them.

He'd make up for it later.

Walking back through the woods on our way out, I suddenly catch the very family stink of pigs at the exact moment a monsterous boar decides I've gotten close enough and arises from his bedding under a tree. He's probably 15 yards from me. Keep in mind my wife is 9 months pregnant and my 3-yr-old son is walking about 10 yards behind me. I briefly panic wondering what I'm going to do if this boar feels threatened enough to charge. But it's unnecessary...

My 70-lb heeler/lab mix that shrieks like a kid if you step on his tail or rub his ears the wrong way shoots at this pig like a laser. The pig tries to run our direction, but my dog cuts him off at every step. Even though I'm nervous as hell (this is at least a 250 lb boar), the damned dog repeatedly dodges charges from the pig effortlessly and answers each charge with a swift bite to the ears, tail, and hind quarters. He makes it look like child's play as he continues to push the boar away from us. Herding has always come natural to him and I've never taught him a thing.

Once I'm satisfied that the boar isn't interested in anything but getting away from my dog, I yell, "Let's go, Miller!" and he completely drops pursuit and runs back to my side, tail wagging like crazy.

Don't think that pig ever touched him.

It's just amazing to watch an animal look as goofy as an animal can possibly look one minute and then see the switch flip into absolute focus and skill a few seconds later. Little rat made a monster of a pig look downright silly almost effortlessly.

He's now napping on our floor and farting. We've come full circle.

Now that story is exactly why I don't get cat people, cuz you will never hear a story like that from them.

Great write up.

Doesn't get any more loyal than a dog. I can't wait to get mine back in a couple weeks.

Got a "frisbee" getter too! I can walk in the back door to get a drink and come right back out - you'd think I'd been gone for a year!

Congratulations on your new little one too.

Yep. Can you imagine how the story would go with a cat in the place of a dog. I think it would go something like this...

"The boar pig jumped and started to charge, the cat ran up a tree. Luckily I had my trusty sidearm. I shot the cat first, then shot the boar pig. My son and I skinned the boar pig while the pregnant wife skinned the dead cat."

Love dogs, but cat's can be beneficial as well. Used to have one that was a snake killing machine. Don't know how many rattlers and cottonmouth's she killed and left on the back steps.

Was your cat a honey badger?
