I know the rut is long gone but, do bucks have to have a licking branch to make a scrape? Thanks...

Probably not but I don't know that I've ever seen a scrape without one.

The few times I have been fortunate to watch a buck make a scrape, they usually started with the licking branch and then moved into the scraping activity, like their aggression was increasing.
I'm betting a scrape usually has a branch over it. My guess anyhoo.

Sometimes they make one at a sign post rub. Same thing only they're leaving their scent on a tree trunk.

Yes! A Weatherby does kill them deader.

I have seen wt. buck's and Mule Deer Buck's make scrapes out in the middle of the pasture ,with no tree branch in site . I think they make many scrapes that they never return to. The one's that have the licking branch's have a better chance of them returning to . I have never been a scrape watcher per say ,but rather a scrape line watcher so to speak. Have seen scrape lines made by both type deer in the same place yr. after yr. and by many different buck . Those are the most interesting . ...Dusty.
