People please help me out here. If I were to be in Michigan and wanted to ship home some of my fathers rifles to me in TX, can I do that or do I need to use a FFL?

You need to use an FFL.

Would it make a difference if your father has given them to you so in essence they are actually yours ? I know you can ship guns to an FFL out of state so if you lined up one in Katy, your father could at least ship them to you via your FFL. I would check out gunbroker for FFL's in your area and see if there is a resonabley priced one. That is a long and expensive trip you are looking at....IMO

I had a client tell me years ago that his BIL use to remove the bolt out of his rifles and send them via UPS to where ever his destination may be, then bring his bolt with him on his carry on luggage. Don't know if your dad could do something similar in manner then ship the bolts seperately, you would have to take the trigger mechanisms out of pistols and shotguns as well to make them an non functioning weapon.

Call the ATF in Dallas. I called them the other day about shipping to another person in state. They told me I had to use a FFL unless I was shipping to myself.

If you have your CHL, an FFL will be more cost efficient.

Thanks for all of the advice. My father has passed and these are guns that my mom said I could have. Not even sure what they are and she probably wouldn't either. They are most likely old and never registered and I wanted to avoid registration if at all possible. I do have a CHL. If my mother has given them to me then they are in essence, mine. So can I ship my rifles to myself, minus the bolt and then ship the bolt to myself separately? Or is this area gray enough that it is not worth the hassle?

Just from the Southern side of me....go see your mother and bring back the guns. She'll appreciate it. Box up the guns and throw 'em in your trunk, drive home. Mamma's happy and you have your guns. Maybe while you're boxing them up ask her a question or two about them, she may know more than you think. A simple, "Where'd this one come from?" can open lots of doors. If you're not even sure what they are surely you can live without them until you can get to your Mom's place.

I shipped my rifle to remington twice in the past couple months ,i do not have an FFL packaged it up got a UPS driver to pick it up with no problems. The UPS stores in some areas will not take them you have to take it to the main hub for shipping.

Absolutely Drifter. I was visiting her this last weekend in Orange Beach where she spends the winter. That is when this came up. Sorry if it sounded like I do not want to visit her.

I would send them to yourself. they are you fathers guns that he passed down to you. FFL might charge you 30 dollars a gun...

Correct. They are your guns now. You can ship them to yourself at your Texas address w/o going through an FFL holder.

Yep - perfectly legal to ship as far as ATF is concerned. See number 9 in this link: ATF Rules

However, UPS is a different story. They want an FFL involved because of the negative publicity that would occur if some nutjob........

I have multiple friends who always ship their guns ahead for out state hunting trips. The boxes don't look like guns and they don't tell anyone that that are guns. These guys are not breaking any laws, just UPS company rules.

Remember that you can't get them to pay for damage if the box gets crushed.

It is illegal to ship a firearm to a non ffl holder. You can sneak all u want but if u get caught is a prison sentence worth it. U cannot ship to ur self unless u are a ffl holder. Call your local ATF office if u don't believe me

I believe if you check you'll find relatives can ship legal firearms to each other..You'll always get some Govt. Employee who
will say this is wrong, but if it is not a purchase, ect..you can
ship to your children, siblings, ect..My cousin has an FFL and does so within the family..Many places don't want to when they work on your weapon, but it's because they are all afraid of the
govt. ect..and they are a business..like when re bbling.ect..but
relatives, family are different...Have your Mom ship w/your name
as shipper and reciever and you will more than comply..DD
