never pulled a bow.....but was given a 60-70 pound bow. You guys think an average male can pull back 60#.

I cant get 70# (its set to that right now) and am a little worried I'm about to embarrassing myself when i get it dropped to 60 and still cant get it...

Na you will be able too.. and it will keep gettin easier once your body gets use to pulling it... mine is on 63lbs right now. you will notice a big difference in tenlbs of draw... also need to make sure its at the right draw length for you....

Can you get it to almost break over?

You should be able to pull it, but before you do take it to a bow shop and make sure that it is going to fit you for draw length. Many bows now have a wide range of adjustment on draw length and getting a good fit is key to success. If you do draw it at 60# make sure that you don't go overboard and draw it a lot, work up to it like any other exercise. There are some small muscles that are used drawing a bow and you can hurt them.

Most importantly, have fun

Might take a little bit to get used to if you haven't pulled a bow before. Just have to train those muscles. I shoot my Z7 extreme at 60lbs. I could shoot 70lb, but it feels comfortable at 60 so thats what I go with.

Verdict was I could...but after about 10 pulls....It was dicey. Good news is I have something to build strength on.

Lord ain't that the truth. I assembled and paper tuned my bow and worked some on my form and I hurt in places I didn't know. Good kind of pain.

Best thing you can do is get some of those physical therapy rubber bands that look like a big strip of rubber. I sit and work those muscles at work sometimes and while I watch tv or whatever. I do this pretty often throughout the year and by bow season I'm ready to go.

ya got it back, thats good.
dont go pulling that sucker til ya cant pull it anymore...
if ya got 10 this time, then just go like 3 shots a day for a week or so. if yer sore, wait a few days til ya pull it again....
basically when the soreness is gone. then try 3 more and maybe you could go a couple days in a row, then work up to 3 a day..until yer not sore anymore. if yer shaking holding the pin on target, yer done.
you can really crap out yer muscles, elbows and/or wrists pulling it back to many times yer first year. like a sprain that never heals. take yer time, go slow.
my buddy has never been able to draw again. not even 50lb.
he has a hard time wrenching on his car from it as well. so be careful, dont think you got it and keep shooting, it will be to late when ya figure it out the hard way.

Yup was a little sore so I backed my bow down a little more. Did some sight in work, but just made sure not to overdue it. Pretty easy to tell when I am reaching the time out point. I figured it would be this way it is about muscle memory. I have had NO problems with holding the bow it is just getting about 2/3rds of the way back and hitting a wall right before it breaks into letoff. Kind of like doing pushups. They call it pyramid training. It isn't so much that you are getting stronger by building the # of reps you do it, it is about training the muscles. Gotta work at it but in the end they payoff will be worth it.

yea, I'm pretty sore this morning. As much as i want to shoot it more again today, I decided to let my arms rest. Kinda sucks too because i was shooting pretty well considering i had no experience (in my opinion) I hit 3 bullseye at 30 yards out of my 10 shots.

the bow is a 60-70 and i have it set about as low as it can go....maybe even at like 58 or 59.

Im considering buying another bow that i can set between 50-60 just to try and work my strength up..... I have the money i was going to use to buy a bow still since this one was given to me. I was hoping the learning curve on this would be short enough where i could start stalking some hogs by march.

The bow I have now is a nice bow...bowtech. Im just worried it is going to take me to long to work up the strength when i could probably get a bow set at 53 and still take some hogs while building up to the nicer bow.

Any thoughts on that?

naaaa.dont swet it. rest for 3 days..more if yer still the slightest bit sore...try again..after a week you will be wondering how it ever gave ya a hard time.
stalking..lmao..whole other animal there!!(<-----total pun)
work on shooting, getting the bull so many times ya go pull em after the 3rd shot cause ya dont wanna end up replacing anymore because they are telescoping.
save yer cash. make sure you are the right size for the bow in the mean time. draw length vs what the bow is set for. usually your height divided by 2.5 will get ya close. (unless you're a monkey, or the opposite, baby armed)
have the bow shop look at it.(NOT BASS PRO SHOP OR GANDER!!! A REAL LIFE BOW SHOP...they are usually next to santa's house i know, but look around, take a drive if ya have to)
have them help you "paper tune" the bow, and get the fps while yer there.(chronograph?).
let us know how that works out.

Don't worry about pulling 60#. With the speeds of bows now. There is no need to shoot 70# anymore.

60 Lbs is plenty for most of north america, that being said some states require 70 lbs I believe for bear hunting. And I would also want atleast 70 Lbs for some of the african game aswell. Just because I can shoot a heavier arrow a little faster.

In case anyone was wondering, after less than a month (from my original post) i pull this thing back like its nothing...it's amazing how fast those muscles build up.

Thanks everyone.

awesome. now remember not to over due it. if ya cant shoot cause yer starting to shake a lil, thats already too many shots.
my buddy "snapped" a muscle, now he has a big knot where the muscle bound up by his elbow, and a smaller one close to his wrist.
my other buddy sprained his wrist. both of them just wanted to go hunting in the fall, over did it practicing..literally a month apart from each other. one of em sold his bow, the other still has hope. wish him luck

Yea, I'm glad I got some of that advice prior to an injury. Thanks everyone. It's fun shooting them so you forget that your pushing your muscles in a way similar to weight lifting.

Now I just need to get some experience. I am hoping I can find someone willing take to me out on a Hog hunt or something like that. Either that or I will probably march around granger and hope I get lucky haha

slow down killer!!!! need some practice 1st...going out and wounding an animal isnt the right way to go....you can read on line everyday of the season about some clown wounding, or killing, a deer never to find it....dont be that guy.
take a year or so to practice. shooting at paper is a totally different...hu umm..animal.<---- seriously, no pun intended. buy ya a 3D target, get ya a blind...shoot your 3D target out of yer blind, wearing the clothes you will be hunting in, sitting in the seat you will be hunting in, wearing the same hat you will be hunting in..get it? get ya a range finder...USE IT!!!!
lots to do b4 stickin something. gl

Agree with everything sprinkler specialist said. Do everything you can to build up and prepare before you attempt to take an animal.

Are you using a wrist strap release? If so and your arms are hurting, you are doing something wrong.

The following had been argued by different
members that have added to this post, but my opinion is you don't need that entire 70 pounds. I've been bowing since the mid-70's and my biggest complaint is there was nobody to teach me. I had a hard go in the beginning because I thought I needed a big poundage bow. I currently shoot at 63 pounds but could shoot at 70 with no problem. Years ago my bow maxed out at 80 but my shoulders would huertafter a practice and that bow cost me a nice mountain Lion because at the moment of truth I couldn't get everything working the way it needed to. My strong suggestion is to take the bow to a pro shop and have it inspected and adjusted to you.
