My buddy is having problems with beavers damning up his north pond and causing the south ponds to dry up. The other problem is the north pond has filled, over flowed, and fixing to break the dam. We have sat out for a few hours at night but can't locate them. Is there any attractants? And is nighttime the best?

I have shot numerous beavers on our property and yes nighttime seems to be the best time, especially in the winter. The warmer the weather, the less I see them. Check and see if you can find the lodge, if you can, gas it and light it up(if safe to do so). If not stake it out and get the spotlight out. If you are sitting and listening, you can actually hear those little bastards eating wood. I've located about half the ones I've shot this way. Sounds like teeth grinding. Also shots on the bank are way easier then when they are swimming. Good luck, you will be amazed at how big those nasty rats can get. I have also noticed that they enter and leave the lakes at a particular spot, creek mouths and areas with lots of exposed brush seem to be the favorite spots.

We talked about burning it, the water would quickly put the fire out. We walked across it and I swear they used concrete. There is no way to get a tractor close to it. Might use a couple of pounds of tannerite strategically placed and see what happens.

There is a good chance they will come flying out of the woodworks when you do so have a gun ready. I've had those little bastards chase me while fishing and start hissing and almost barking at me when I got to close to the lodge. We used some sort of cyanide bomb a while back, they came out like roaches when the lights got cut on. AR-15 fun didn't describe the scene that subsequently played out smile

Trapping is the best method to get rid of the things. Tear out the damn be that with Tannerite or work with rakes dragging it out and setup to watch. when they check it due to water level drop is a good time to shoot them. Usually get one or 2 that way every time I tear out a dam. The things are bad about tunneling into tank dams and have destroyed lots of tanks that way by weakening the dam. Find the slides where they like to leave and enter the water and set Conabear traps or snares to catch the boogers. Have too much experience with them IMO.

If you clean up all the brush close to the tank they will usually leave. Remove the food source and they will go elsewhere.

We lost a damn on a 10 surface acre lake a while back due to them tunneling into it. You are the first person outside my family to acknowledge that they will do this crap. People think I'm crazy when I tell them that.

They don't wise up to bullets smile I've shot two in one 10 second period, the second one followed the first one into my sights.

An experienced beaver trapper will not let them become educated. Most educated beaver are because of fur trappers or amatuers. Anybody can set traps and catch animals and then they have one or two they cant catch(beaver, coyotes). Those ones they cant catch seperate the amatuer trapper from the professional damage control trapper.

Beaver always leave a well traveled trail out of the pond to where they are knawing the trees down. They use the trail constantly at night when they work and they are really pretty easy to trap using these trails. Be sure to anchor the trap pretty good or a big fat beaver will end up with it in the water with him.

I stopped on traps because of bycatch and educated beavers. They started shoving sticks into the trap, LOL.

So I took to hunting them with night and actually found it much more productive and satisfying. We don't have the nice wood lodges on our creek, but burrows into the side of the creek. Popping them when they come out is satisfying.

It is really fun shooting them. During the day sometimes they will be busy and its like shooting a little boat. Set a trap designed for beaver underwater just before their run. They headlong into it every time and drown within a few minutes. They don't have sticks in their mouths heading out of the water and I've never seen it as a problem with them triggering the trap and not getting caught in it. Granted, it is more fun to blast away at them.

Do you tan the hides after killing them or let the coyotes have them?

I trapped this one with a conabear trap in downtown Florence a few years back. Ended up mounting it up for TCU. Beavers have a market value for taxidermists. If you don't want to do anything with it I would go and try and sell them. Make sure you have a trapper's license though.

Some areas have special buyers that use the beaver hides to make authentic "beaver rings". These are sticks curved and tied to make a circle. The beaver hide is stretched inside this circle. Makes a pretty cool wall hanger. We sold hides years ago for pretty good money to the guy who bought the coon hides.

find where they dammed up the spill way and wait till before dark and tear as much of a hole as you can do in that time. just as long as water is running pretty good. sit back with a spot light where you can see them swimming up to it and working on it. trust me as soon as its dark those boogers will be working on that to stop the water from running... its how i kill them every time. killed three within 10mins one time. they just kept coming.

We had issues with beavers on our farm for years until I met with the county extension agent and he gave me all the advice needed. We bought a conibear 330 and have kill over 20 beavers with it. First, you tear out the damn about a foot wide where the water will drain. Then, put the trap at the opening on the water side of the damn where you tore it out. Make sure you anchor the trap vertically by jabbing two sticks in the mud through each spring eyelet. Check it the next morning and I can guarantee you will have a beaver. Repeat this process until the beavers get smart; usually happens after the first two are caught. Once they get smart, they will pile sticks into the trap. When this happens, move the trap further out into the water; at least a foot past the damn opening. Then, you will start catching them again. We generally catch about 4 to 6 beavers per damn. Our largest was 49 lbs. Google conibear 330 and there are several places on the web that sell them. They are dangerous traps so be careful and good luck.

Tear a big hole in the dam early in the day. Late in the day set quiet with a .22 and a green light. Shoot them when they come to fix the dam. Repeat daily.

Top pic, I'm over 6 ft smile I'll note I didn't measure him, just went off of what I had from the pics. Didn't realize how big that damn thing was until we got back to the computer. I did break a fish scale attempting to weigh him the first time.....lol

Nice pics. I was night hunting hogs a few weeks back and had a nutria hopping and jumping around like he was on crack. I hunt a lot at night and have never seen anything like that.
