I was out checking snares two mornings ago and had a wonderful encounter with this waterbuck. Its so seldom to see a waterbuck so relaxed out in the wide open space like this. Most photos I get of them they are in the brush. This guy was grazing away and lifted his head before coolly looking me right in the eye! He is around four years old, maybe a tad older. We'll let him be for another year or even two, and then he'll be one fine trophy. Man, a waterbuck is a fine looking animal! Made me glad that I am riding around camera ready these days.

Nice young Ellipses Waterbuck. They are bigger bodied than what you would think and have an attitude to match sometimes. They also stink like heck when you get close to them. Nice pics.

Great pics. I have been lucky enough to see free range Waterbuck bulls twice. Neither time was I in a position where I could shoot.

I'd really like to get a waterbuck one day. Are they any good to eat?

The ones I have encountered in Africa taste bad. Every inquiry resulted in the same reaction. It is all very pungent
wasting my life one arrow at a time.

Very nice bull.
We shot one last week and it weighed in at 175kg carcas only. If skinned correct there is nothing wrong with their meat.

Koedoeberg Safaris in RSA is offering a special for your choice either 1 kudu 54"> , or 1 Nyala or 1 waterbuck plus a warthog. 7 days food and lodging for $2000.00 us. I don't work for these guys , I am just a hunter passing along good info.
-Jerry Don't you think maybe that is slightly inappropriate to post on this thread??

We ate meat from the Waterbuck I killed in Zimbabwe. The bad taste of the meat comes from mishandling of the meat after touching the hide. The hide has a very sweet pungent odor that will taint the meat. The meat we ate was delicious. Not as good as the eland but good.
