Academy has some cheap ones. Paint scheme isn't too good but if you're wanting them cheap that's where to go. Or do what I did, every paycheck through the off season I bought a dozen decoys so I would be stock piled come duck season

Why go cheap if you are planning on hunting the long term? Just pay the money now rather than buy cheap then pay again in a year.

Not to highjack your post but I'm in the same boat. Just starting and have some old hand me downs.

What are good decoys and what would y'all suggest for quantities and the different types?

I prefer greenhead gear. They're paint schemes are realistic, they're durable, and ducks love them. As far as what kind to buy depends on where you hunt and what birds you normally shoot but you can never go wrong with teal, gadwall, pintail, or even spoonies and blue bill to add a realistic touch

I only have a dozen teal. No need in having an entire spread of them

I would stay away from redhead brand from bass pro they looked good so I paid the money bought 2 boxes to get a dozen had them 2 seasons and I have one left, they dry rot, the plastic is thin so they crack just not very durable. I know the academy ones are cheap but to be honest they have lasted the longest out of all my decoys, yes the paint sucks, I just recently got the inflatable ones from Cherokee outdoors and I'm impressed little wind they move like crazy, light, always land upright due to not having a keel, and they look good the head spins so you can place them how you want

I have had really good luck with my GHG decoys, just finished the 3rd season with 6 dozen. I just picked up 3 more dozen on sale last week.

The hunting i did this yr we seemed to do better with fewer decoys out. I was wanting to purchase 2 pairs of each to put out when i hunt alone. Don't really want to get a dozen of each if possible. I may be going about this wrong?

I never had any problems at all with GHG? Used them for years and beat the crap out of them, never had a leak or any paint chip off. I agree with staying away from redhead brand, pure garbage. Mine didnt even last 5 hunts

For the most part they come in half dozen. GHG has combos called the marsh puddler pack, the puddler pack, and one other that I forget, but you get a drake/hen of 3 species

Jeff is prejudiced against avery. There was a good string of years that the paint wouldn't stick for crap. They're decent now, but G and H decoys will outlast you.

Flambeau stormfronts are decent plastic, but crappy paint. If you don't mind repainting them, they're a decent buy.

G and H will definitely outlast, they're just more expensive and the paint schemes aren't as lifelike

I'm a cheap kinda guy, I still use Greenhead gear. I don't think they are the best but there's no way in heck I would ever spend the stupid amount of cash that some of those decoys cost. Since my decoys were stolen I had to use my old flambeaus I got about 10 years ago...still killed ducks over them all season long.

If you're worried about paint, why don't you get a can of krylon and spray it on your decoys.
