Wasn't sure where to post this. Anyone have a simple bunk bed design to share? Need to build several sets for new deer lease. Don't need to be pretty. Funtional and cheap is most important. Will probably use 2x4's. I need dimensions so regular twin matresses will fit. Thanks for the help.

I would get 4 4x4(s) and two twin size frames with the nylon spring box spring thing and then mount the frames between the 4x4s with lag bolts. Put 2x4 Cross braces on each end...

I built 2 bunkbeds in my cabin & they work great. Just 2 x 6 for posts, 2 x 4 rails & mattress frame, with a OSB plywood laying on top. Not pretty, but solid and does the job. Don't have no photos, but going out next week & can take a few pics if wanted. Simple to build, to any dimensions.

I looked but don't have my plans anymore. I googled them a few years ago and make two sets, all out of 2x4's and some 1/2 inch plywood. They are plenty sturdy made out of just 2x4's.

If you're willing to screw 2x4's to the wall, all you need is 1 post. My dad was a carpenter in Louisiana and built tons of bunks over the years on offshore supply boats and tugboats.

He would screw a 1x4 to the back wall and side wall (if in a corner. Then run a single ~7' 1x4 to post and then ~3' 1x4 back to wall. Would rout oak boards to screw to the outside. Cut the plywood to fit right on the 1 x4's.

For his 1 corner post he'd use 2 1x4's cut at a 45 and glued together.

When I helped him with installs it basically went like this:

1. he had 2 rectangles made from 1x4's. He'd screw 1 or 2 sides (if in a corner) to the wall.
2. He' support them with a 2x4 or something else.
3. Then he would screw in the decorative oak trim on all outside pieces.
4. Attach corner posts.
5. Fit plywood on top of 1x4s.

I laughed at him the first time I saw him and he told me 500 lb men slept in his beds.

When we built our camp he did the same thing, only put a full sized bed on bottom. Have slept in that bed with the entire family on a few trips to the camp.

There's no reason 2x4's won't be sufficient.

If you screw the supports to the walls, you don't need angled supports.

Actually looked up pictures. Looks like he ran another 1x4 on the edges against the walls as well.

Also looks like he just went with 1x8 on the sides for the camp.

You might want to add some cross members under the OSB. That stuff will bend over time and may fall on someone. Otherwise looks good.

My dad has built thousands of bunks over the years on offshore workboats. Those bunks aren't coming down. If you were standing on the bed in the dead center every time you climbed up there maybe.

But once you put a mattress up there and climb in, your weight is well distributed.

This campboat was sold. But there are three camps at another hunting lease with probably 20 sets of bunks between them built exactly like these. Plenty of 300+lb men have slept on those bunks for about 20 years now. No one has fallen yet............

With that said if there is concern it would be cheap/easy insurance to add a couple supports.

Well, they needed to withstand some serious PSI on the downstroke.

Need to build a ladder to the top bunk. That getting out of the top bunk in middle of night with no light is a bummer.

Drop by the furniture store and buy 2 pair of bolt on twin rails (around $30 per pair), build your ends out of 2X4s and it is done.

We built some recently and decided to build full over full bunks. I highly suggest this is adults will ever sleep in them.
