I'm relatively new to bow hunting and the recovery of my one kill was quite an experience lasting over two hours. From what I gather that's not unusual. Fortunately it was early in the day and I had plenty of time to look.
But the last few evening hunts I find myself watching the watch and getting anxious while there's still almost an hour of legal hunting.
Does anyone wrap up a bow hunt earlier than they would with a rifle to avoid the liklihood of havng to recover an animal in the dark?

Never. There are no guarantees even in rifle hunting.

I shot my best buck when I was 13 and it was a great shot behind the shoulder and exited right in front of the offside sholder. Deer ran maybe 200 yards in a complete circle. Left it overnight and found him the next morning.

It just depends on how the shot felt to you. If you track for a while and find a large pool of blood where it look like it layed down then back off and let them expire or you could keep pushing them farther away and the blood trails will get smaller.

I did last weekend as I was alone and realized I didn't have a flash light on the property.

The only time I would be hesitant is during rain just due to the possibility of the rain washing away the blood trail.

But normal conditions NO.

How late after legal shooting time do you wait before hiking out?

I'd be a vegitarian too if bacon grew on trees.

I stop shooting 30 min before dark but stay in my stand if I have deer at the feeder. I hate tracking in the dark.

Had the same problem last weekend scot

Isn't it funny how day by day nothing changes but when you look back everything is different.

Nowadays people know the price of everything and the value of nothing.

It all depends on what is going on. I will stay till well after dark if there are deer around. If not, I will will get out about the time I cant see anymore.

I actually prefer evening hunts. Seem to have better action on our place on evenings as well. IN fact I took a main frame 8 the other night that taped out at 157-3/8". smile

If you are asking, "Do you leave your stand?" then no. But I have let deer walk all because I didn't feel like having to clean it well after dark.
But if that deer would have came in an hour earlier, might be a different story. grin
