when looking at the 2 wings, I can tell someone the quickest way to ID them, but I wont reveal it till this game is over.

Though most who don't know will probably will hit google before voting on these, y'all try to make your votes on your first impression without the research.

I think there are enough votes. Because the poll is never ending and will become skewed with the answers given here are the results as of 10:00pm. Picture of the bill. It is a blue wing. I took the picture for the poll at the same angle as the bill on a blue wing fourtrax had posted earler today. A few got it wrong, most got it right. A few like turtles. Northern Shoveler 18 (25%) Blue Wing Teal 42 (58%)correct I like turtles 13 (18%) http://www.fototime.com/BF6E62E5AF6A11E/standard.jpg First wing is an immature Shoveler. Blue Wing Teal 18 (29%) Northern Shoveler 42 (68%)correct I like turtles 2 (03%) http://www.npwrc.usgs.gov/resource/birds/duckplum/shoveler.htm Second wing is an immature Blue Wing. Northern Shoveler 7 (19%) Blue Wing Teal 28 (78%)correct I like turtles 1 (3%) http://www.npwrc.usgs.gov/resource/birds/duckplum/bwciteal.htmMost are getting the wings right, but they would be difficult for most without a whole bird to look at. Ishootspoonies, I will pass the buck to you to explain the difference.

Pretty cool pic on flicker of a cinn teal, shoveler, and blue wing together... go to flicker and search: Teal and Shoveler Dead Strap. I would copy it, but it is copyrighted.
Their wings look very similar!!

Pictures were courtesy of the U.S. Geological Survey. You will notice the usgs site just lumps blue wing and cinnamon together for plumage identification. But I think the different answers on the clear pics show you really can't tell from a blurry picture of part of a bird in a group of birds. http://www.npwrc.usgs.gov/resource/birds/duckplum/bwciteal.htm

look at the rachis (the middle part or the feathers) on the primaries, (long feathers on the right). The shovelers rachis are considerably more white than the teal's. it was hard to tell with just one wing, but when you look at the 2 together it's pretty obvious.
I didn't mean to skew your results, I just got a little excited. We had this same test in a wildlife ID class at SFA, with real wings of course.

Pictures I used are immature males. For anyone interested via the links given it has wings for male, female, adult, and immature to compare.

Blue wing is closer related to the N Shovler than the green wing I read that in the Delta Mag as well. They also said the green wing was closer to the widgeon.
Dear Lord please bullwhip me for saying this but I agree, Marcstar is in the lead. Please nobody use this as a quote!!!

I feel bad for the blue wing and spoonie that are now flying around in circles because they had to have one of their wings cut off for our education.

I was a little upset when I saw they had moved my wings from the foyer to the wildlife lab. The seed collection that we replaced had been there since the 60's!

If it looks like either of those shoot it right now. When the dog brings it back if it has a little beak you keep it cuz it is good. Big boot lip you stomp it and did the world a favor. Everyone is a winner
