Anybody ever hunted at Balcones and have some feedback? Just saw online that I was selected.
Main questions...wondering if baiting is allowed and if they have the bonus tag system like TPWD draw hunts. Also many hogs there?

Try the Brimstone, great whiskey. I have no knowledge to any of your actual questions, it was the first thing to come to mind when I saw the topic name.

Balcones Canyonland is west of I35/Round Rock, near Leander (NW of Austin). Their website didn't mention whether buck or doe. Just said deer, hogs and turkey. I've heard you have to take a doe first, then can take a buck. Not sure if that's the case.I'm sure I'll get all the details when I get my permit in the mail. Just wondering if anyone on the forum had the inside scoop.

Not familiar with that exact place, but I have some land in Jonestown and there are tons of deer including some very nice bucks.

I've hunted there a couple of times, some beautiful country. What area did you draw? Some areas are by compartment and some assigned blinds. I had Unit 2 and an assigned blind. The blind was probably one of the nicest I ever hunted in. You will have to sign in at the HQ before hunting. You then go to your assigned area to hunt. You will be required to shoot a doe first. You take the doe to the HQ and they will then issue you a buck permit to you. Can't kill a buck until you get a doe. I shot a doe the first morning before the sun was up, should be no problem. The next morning I shot a really nice 10 pt, a good deer for the area. Had a 19" spread. The staff is very professional and helpful. If you need anymore info just let me know.
