You will need to apply by the 30th. It is $423 application fee and then another $56 for your license when you get there.

I hunt there every year. What county is it in?

Dont go late October. Push it back a few days. Depending on how much time you have to take, you will want to be there as much as possible from Nov 1- 14. This year I am going the 7-14. I hunt Pike County.

Yes there are MONSTERS there. I see them every year. Missed a 150" 8pt last year. Buddy killed at 160" droptine giant last year. My doe field dressed nearly 200lbs last year. The deer are big and dont let them fool you. If a buck is even with his ears, he will be 18" wide.

I love love love hunting Illinois. It is by far the most fun and exciting hunt that I have ever done. That is why I keep going back.

$500 is a freaking steal. Jump on it and be there as much as you can.

PM me with any other questions, I will be glad to help.

Sounds like the place I hunted in WI the past few years. Have your buddy do some long range scouting to find pinch points and the entry/exit points to what fields you plan on hunting. Crossing in the low lands if there is a creek is another spot. Hunting standing corn isn't the easiest, and once the beans turn yellow, they don't get hit as much until they are harvested. One thing I will say, ask the farmer closer to your hunting time when he plans on harvesting. Hunting during harvest is counter-productive in my experience. Theres lots more, but its a starting point. If you got other questions, shoot me a pm. Good hunting this season!

I appreciate all the replies and help.

The farm is in McDonough County and is mostly crops but there is about 300 acres of river bottom timber.

I called the Illinois DNR a couple of weeks ago to ask about non-resident hunting and the lady I talked to told me there was no need to enter the lottery that they have never run out of tags. That makes me nervous now that I read some of these replies. Should I just go ahead and apply just to be safe? I hated to apply and then something come up where I couldn't go but if there might be a problem I would rather go ahead and get it done. I asked her multiple times about applying and she said "No need to, we have plenty of tags". I honestly don't know how knowledgeable she was about it. I asked her about the archery lottery and she said "there's not one, archery is over the counter". I told her I thought she was wrong and she said "let me look". Then she came back on the phone and said I was right that the archery was on the lottery system too but there was no need to enter it because they have never run out of tags.

I certainly would not wait on "left over tags"....by all means PUT IN FOR THE DRAW! ! ! I hunted Pike County last year too - saw the biggest buck I've ever seen, but he was past legal light. Game Wardens are very active, especially in the "hot" counties like Pike, Brown, and Adams.

It would be best for you to get some trail cameras out to get some idea of their travel; have the farmer leave a couple of rows of his CRP. You cannot "bait", but that's the next best thing.

It does get dark earlier, since you are farther north. I was used to hunting till 6PM here in Texas, you might get past 5:20PM up there!

I went to college in mcDonough county and there are some really big bucks there! I would go ahead and apply for a license just to be sure. Would hate to make that long drive and then not be able to hunt. My brother says they are not going to turn down that Texas money but I made sure!!

I am from IL originally and I still have a lease up there in Jefferson County. For gun season you have to put in the county you plan to hunt on the lottery app but most everyone wins the lottery. You can buy over the counter tags after the lottery in most counties. IL is best for bow hunters, Oct 1st until the Thursday before gun season is your best window. Once the first three day gun season starts those deer get spooked. Half the deer are harvested every year and 75% are taken before thanksgiving and there is hunting pressure like you have never seen in Texas. Half the deer herd is harvested and there is a 50% success rate in IL so statistically there may be as many hunters as deer in the woods. They grow big bucks, much bigger than TX but the opportunity is way lower. You can hunt with a revolver or single shot pistol that generates 500 ft lbs or more at the muzzle and is shorter than 1.4" case length. I use a bolt action slug gun, a muzzle loader and contender .44 mag. IL is nasty when it comes to your Constitutional rights so be very careful with transporting a loaded or even uncased unloaded gun.

Thanks for the info but I don't plan on carrying anything but my bow with me.

I was able to find the property on Google Earth and it looks awesome. Lots of river bottoms and cover leading into the crops.

Make sure your bow is cased while in the vehicle. I would try and get a hard copy of the regs sent to you, as well as read the on line regs....Good luck this year, we are pulling for you!

outfitter told me trick and legal to just wrap string in position where you can't pull or fire it. I case mine anyway.

IL is a lottery state, so make sure you get your application in before the deadline. Also a climbing stand is a nice thing to bring along also.

Pray that the corn comes down early! When the corn is still up it makes for some tough hunting.

I hunt in Fulton County (Canton, IL area). The bucks are HUGE in Illinois. The hardest thing is to be able to judge antler size. The bodies can easily reach 300 lbs and the racks on those bucks will look small when actually they may be 170-180 inch range.

Also - practice longer shots than what you may take here in Texas. There is no baiting (feeders) allowed so you will typcially rattle in bucks to a cut corn field, food plot, CRP field etc. If you limit yourself to 30 yard shots you may cut out alot of chances. Get comfortable with 40-50 yard shots and you have a much better chance of bagging a nice one.

I am going up Nov 7-14. Prime time baby. Once you go you will go back every year. I love it.

Also, as mentioned above, make darn sure your bow is cased when traveling and leave all handguns at home - even if you have a CCL. An uncased bow is considered an illegal weapon. Illinois does not recognize the right to carry so do not get caught with any type of firearm in your vehicle.

But don't let the above sour you on Illinois - it is great hunting and you will never be happy with a 200 lb buck again.

Summed it pretty good. I hunt a little further south in the famed Pike County. People will never understand the MidWest until they have been 25' up in a tree and lay eyes on on eof those big boys. I have seen many of em and have missed a couple.

I leave my bow cased unless I am shooting at the target or walking to the stand.

Miller said 1 thing that I have said for years now..."Once you go you will go back every year" and trust me, you will find a way to get up there. It is insane, fun, relaxing, intense, etc. all at the same time.

I hunt on the border of Knox and Fulton counties during the first firearm season every year in cornfields. The corn or lack of can really change the outcome of the 3 day season. if you have a little standing corn you have a deer heaven.

Also, I usually arrive a couple of days early before firearm season begins and the peak is just winding down, so the 2nd week of November would probably be the best time to hunt.

This year I got drawn for a Kansas archery tag, either species, so I will leave TX for KS around November 3rd, hunt deer, pheasant, duck and goose in Kansas, then off to Illinois for firearm deer, and wont be back to Texas until right before Thanksgiving. Will be my longest hunting trip ever.
