in feb there was a guy on here giving pups away. well i got one i think they where mixed being half chessie and half bass. cuz this darn pup loves the water. i mean the week we brought him home at 6 weeks he'd go in to his belly and know hell chase anything retrieve any bumper ball or stick out of the pond. chase ducks fish. so he'll be 4 mo later this month.is it to early to introduce him to the shotgun and birds.

Nope! Not if you do it right.

Be careful Robert. First let him chase and catch the pigeon. Then intro the gun from a distance while he's in full pursuit of the next pigeon. If there's no reaction to the shot, other than to acknowledge it. Using yet another pigeon or the same one if you're able to save it, have the gunner a little closer. The gunner should be using a blank gun or a .22. Repeat until the gunner is right next to you as the pup is in pursuit of the pigeon. Then repeat with shotgun.

A lot of chessies have curly or wavy hair, even if they are half poodle it's not totally bad. Ask cappy of the migratory section about ol rusty dawg, lab/poodle and a good one.

Bird inro I like to use a duck wing first play retrieves. Then I will take a live pegion cut his fight feathers and let the dog have it I will do this two too three times. Gun intro I start early about 10 weeks old pots pans just making load noise hammer on a board. Duck hunting videos start the tv on a low setting then over about two weeks I turn it all the way up. Then I get a toy cap guns with a bunch of caps and give them to the kids. By the time I have done all that I can start with a 209 starter pistol at 40 yards and work it in to the dog in a no time. Or if you can't do that I would wait tell you have the dog retrieving out to 75 - 100 yards have a buddy out at 100 yards with bummpers and starter pistol have him blow a duck call intro to call at same time yell mark fire the starter pistol pointed away from the dog so it's not as load and then throw the bumper. Only do about three retrieves. Over about a month if your training everyday slowly work the starter pistol to the dog. Then do it again with your shot gun. Yes your going holy crap two months but you have to make gun fire a normal nosie for the dog. I have seen guys take dogs and have the gun over there head in a week then all of a sudden the dog turns gun shy. Gun shy is curable but that may take 6 months. I too have one of them chessies from Landon I have trained Labs for years but this is the first chessie ever in my kennel. I can't speak for all chessies but this guy is a bit different that training a lab. Just my 2 cents
