Every bird I saw, lizards, bullfrogs all with a Daisy BB gun. Guess I started at 4 or 5 yrs old can't remember now, but have been hooked ever since.

I shot everything that moved with a pellet gun first off, but quickly graduated to shooting coyotes with my grandpa and dove and quail with my dad. Shot my first deer when I was 8.

Slingshot and taconite pellets for frogs, then bb gun for birds, then long bow for rabbits, then .22 for squirrels, then 12 gauge for ducks, pheasants and deer, then rifles for deer. M16A1, A2, M4, M21, M24, and a Bradley fighting vehicle for certain two legged creatures.

My dear old dad would have rather watched the grass grow as to hunt. However, he still found the time to take me squirrel hunting a few times as a kid.

It wasn't until I married into a family of hunters that I got the chance to begin to learn how to do it. The rest I've picked up in the bathroom where I keep a solid stash of magazines, my favorite being Deer and Deer Hunting.

Of course it also took applying those lessons learned in the bathroom while in the field. :-)

Chipmunks, pine squirrels, rats in the barn and pigeons. I was dangerous with a BB gun.

I work hard, drink a little and hunt when I can.

There is a surprising amount of people that learned on squirrels. They dont get much attention on here but a lot of people learned on them, from all ages it seems. Do all of you with children now teach your children on the things you learned on or just what your into now? Also I was taught when growing up that what I killed we ate. I tested that only once with a blue jay when I was like 6 or 7 and my mother cleaned it and cooked it like a dove for me to eat. It tasted horrible even through the bacon.

My first memeory of a hunt was going on a dove hunt with my dad. My first hunting experience was squirrel hunting, and I'll never forget the words that were passed down from his great uncle from him to me..."step where I step, walk where I walk, sit where I sit, but above all young man be as quiet as possible". It is like I am reliving it right now in my mind!!!

Dad and I used to hunt squirrels in the woods behind our home in Georgia. Brings back good times. I progressed onto dove and quail before I was 10.
I didn't start my kids out on tree rats. I thought them pretty fast how to shoot 22's plinkin and shooting shotguns. The first hunt they went on was a dove hunt.

Armadillos with a 22LR.
We had a 3 acre garden at the family land, they dillos got to destroying our melons, so it got to the point where Dad and I would sit up at night, on weekends, and kill them with the 22. it eventually got to the point where we were taking shifts and taking them out. We put a hurtin' on them that year. It took several years for the population to bounce back.

After that, I moved on to squirrels, rabbits, and the usual stuff. Snakes were always targets of opportunity. I was hunting deer alone by the time I was 9yrs old.

I miss the good ol days.

When I really didn't know any better I chased and shot a wild pig with a BB gun. Shot the heck out of him and couldn't figure out why he/she didn't fall to my superior firepower. After all, I had upgraded from a Daisy to a Crossman. East Texas rooter evaded me, I was all of 10 years old.

Skip forward to 13. First real hunting was dove/squirrel and anything else that walked, crawled, or flew. With a single shot 20ga or pump 22.

Just thought I would ask because I just had a daughter and it is something that has crossed my mind on how I was introduced to hunting. Then i saw this topic and it just kind of fit.

This is greatness! I had a similar talk but not said so succinctly. I think Ill use something similar when its time as well since I heeded the warning and I would venture to guess most of us did as well.

Rhinos on the plains, crocs in the bayous, and buffs in the brush. I did have a long way to walk to school and pretty vivid imagination. Maybe it was jackrabbits outside Odessa with my dad's Winnie 61. Some of those jackrabbits were pretty vicious.
