I'm moving to Houston in June. This will be my first time in the state and would like to hunt with my father this year. I've been hunting every season with him for the past 22 years.

What is whitetail hunting like down in Texas?

We are used to walking a lot through wooded mountain forests with below freezing temps and a foot of snow. I've been reading a lot about deer feeders, is this how most folks hunt? We like to walk during the day and sit for dark. Can anyone here provide any feedback on clothing/hunting styles/leases? He would probably come visit around Thanksgiving to hunt which coincides with VT hunting season and the end of the construction season.

Thank You,

Austin

VThunter I think you will enjoy hunting Texas, but going to bet it will be very different from what you are accustomed to. First there is very little public land to hunt on in Texas. The private land is leased, for the most part, and each land owner and lease have rules for that lease. One of the more common rules seems to be no hunting from out side the blind. Main reason is safty and to prevent disturbing animal in fellow lease member's "area". As for feeders they are the norm and used on the majority of the public land. Depending on where you decide to lease the number of deer that can be taken can be very generous and not uncommon to see a lot of deer each sit. Also, the season is longer than in most other states. One thing to remember about leases is good ones dont come available every day and when one does it usually is not open long. Guided hunts are a great option, but there is generally not much fexability and usually you are required to hunt with a guide, or have set animal requirements/limits. Good luck and Welcome to Texas and THF.

Welcome to the forum and be thorough when searching for a place to lease. Some shady dealings out there. They will be posted here from time to time but it doesn't hurt to ask about a certain individual. Again welcome to Texas.
