This is a question for you guys who are more experienced with trained hunting dogs...
I have a new black lab pup. She is about 5 months old now. She seems to be coming along well with what little training I give her. Sit, stay, fetch, and boundry limitations. However, I want her to be a good hunting dog that will retreive birds, etc. Don't exactly know how to get there.
Don't have the money to spend on expensive training schools, so I guess I'll try to do it myself. Suggestions on books, dvd's, or anything out there that will train me to be a better trainer for her would be appreciated.
The only problems we have with her at this point is basic puppy stuff such as chewing up everything she can get a hold of and jumping on people for play. I need to break her of these habits now before it's too late. Other than that, just need suggestions from a group of people on training guides I can use.

find a pro close to you and you can go out and watch and do daily training sessions and they can help you and thats much cheaper. i dont recomend books because you can get more out of a video actually seeing it..labs chew till there two and shed till there dead. always remember that.. just work on obediance and keep building her desire to retrieve..go to www.retrievertraining.net it is a site just for retrievers and some of the top pros in the country and hall of fame trainers are there to give you advice..

yes these are field trial people but basics are basics no matter what venue or if you just want a hunting dog.

also remember she is still a pup so dont give her so much that she will fail and dont be suprised if here soon she doesnt want to retrieve as much or is holding things a lil diff because she will be losing teeth.

Thanks all. I'll check these suggestions out. She seems to be a good dog so far and I get a lot of compliments on her. Her grandparents were supposedly good hunting dogs. From what I hear, the owners (me) need to be trained as much as the dog. I am looking forward to future hunting success with her.

with that statement right there you already have half the battle won good luck and if I can ever help shoot me a PM!

I would also recommend that you join an HRC/AKC club. The knowledgeable members there can help with the "owner" training.

Charger I believe enough has been said. I don't think there is much more advice than can be given to your questions. Thats what I love about this board is there is quite alot of people willing to help when somebody is in need.
