Not sure what its called but its the pad about 1/4 of the way up the leg I guess the same as a thumb for you and me... anyway we were playing frisbee yesterday and when we got home I noticed some blood on the kitchen floor come to find out she had ripped it about 3/4 of the way off, I cleaned the wound and put neosporin on it.
anything else I should consider? she dosent seem to be in any pain would it be ok to hunt her this weekend or should we take a week off?

the dew claw? that is the exact reason those should be removed as pups because they get cought on things and can be torn off. has to be done when they are a couple of days old so wasnt your fault she still has her dew claw. me personally i wouldnt hunt her in lake water with an open sore as it could get infected but at same time i have heard people say with the water as cold as it is you may not have to worry about the bacteria lik you would it the summer. hope she gets better soon.

try and keep her from licking it. neosporin is good and so is letting it get some air to try and dry out but dont put peroxide on it a bunch.

You should give her the weekend off and invite your buddy and his dog out hunting with ya instead. Seriously though, I'd be afraid of infection from the mud and water.

EMT gel is a good product. I wouldn't take her hunting til she has healed. To easy for her to re-injure the dew claw.
Shopping with your husband is like hunting with the game warden. Experience is what you get, when you didn't get what you wanted.

You said she doesn't seem to be in any pain and is not favoring the leg at all, right? This is just me, but I'd wrap (not too tight) the injured dew claw with some vet tape (that tape that sticks to itself) while I was hunting so she can't rip it any more. When you're finished hunting, take the tape off, clean it up and move on. If I stopped huting my dogs cause they are bleeding, I'd never get to use them. They get cut up by barbed wire, bushes, sticks and limbs, etc. every time we go out, and that's at least every weekend.

Well, I sent ya a PM, but it's gonna say what CC and JT said. WHen they remove the dew claw, they don't remove that pad, so it's still there even on dogs that have had their dew claws removed.
In addiition to the neosporine, wrap it too, since it's been severed so far. Pin it close to the leg, wrap firm (but not to cut off circulation) with sterile gauze. You can put athletic tape over that, if it helps to keep it in place. You want it to not be able to move around or get caught on anything while it's still healing.
Yes, I'd take some time off to let it heal.

Yeah, sorry, you could definitely tape it up & still hunt her, I was mostly commenting about the E.M.T, gel, good stuff.

Not a vet here, but am a medical professional...
I know dog saliva has natural antibiotic properties, and I know dogs are much more resilient than humans (we are mostly a species of sissies, no gender differentiation meant there), so I think as long as it is wrapped so the paw will not openly flail during the hunt, you should be good.
Any water right now will have bacteria, but those bacteria are unlikely to live in a warm blooded species this time of year, since they are cold loving bacteria (the body heat will essentially kill them), so wouldn't worry about that.
If your dog seems fine, let her hunt. It is what she likes to do, don't make a bad situation worse by not taking her. If during the hunt the leg starts getting favored, then it was a bad idea, but you should already have an idea if it was favored by now, and you said she wasn't favoring it. By the end of next week it will nearly healed up and shouldn' be an issue going forward.
BTW, love that Dude is a lady! Pretty dog too!

It isnt the dew claw its the small pad that is above the dew claw... this is the best pic I could find on short notice, but you can see the pad directly above the dew claw.

My concern with hunting her is that Dude is pretty energetic. If she gets it hung up on something, even wrapped, she's gonna tear it. If it's 3/4's torn off now, won't take much more to completely sever it. You know dogs... you think it's wrapped good then next thing you know, the tape's gone. I agree with TXBuck about the saliva, but unlike people, dog's don't baby an injury unless it's really bothering them. And knowing Dude, she's more so that way than a lot of dogs. Just my

Yeah, I saw that. My post above said that when they remove the dew claw, they don't remove that pad, so it will still be there. But it can get torn again while still healing, so be careful.

Agree with ya ISL, but I guess my question is this:
If she isn't seemingly bothered by the pad being nearly ripped off now, what difference will it make to her if it is totally ripped off in the field? There is no purpose for that pad is there (serious question I don't know the answer to)?
My thoughts are if it rips off it rips off, and it will heal the same as if it was partially ripped off. Would treat it as a bad scrape in the situation it gets ripped off, treat it the same if it doesn't get ripped anymore.
Newbie, so be light on me...but this isn't a show dog right?

You can get some stuff called Pad Heal at your local feed store. It is manufactured in Cedar Hills, Texas. It contains raw linseed oil, spirit of turpentine, pure menhaden oil, balsam of fir, bees wax and oil of vitriol. Keep a bottle of it on my desk. As you apply it the bees wax seals the injury and more applications seal over the previous. Give her some off time to heal. Sorry to hear she isn't feeling good.

I agree with some of the others. Wrap it and apply a triple antibiotic ointment and watch for infection. If it is bothering her you might have to help with the pain.
Also, when dewclaws are removed as puppies everything is removed even that pad. This is a good example why they should be removed to avoid annoying injuries like these. Good luck

Good luck I'm looking at 5 dogs/puppies that all have had dew claws removed. All still have that pad. Hmm. Not sure who is removing your puppies dewclaws, but proper procedure is to remove everything. The cut is made at the base of the digit....basically flush with the leg. If you run your hand along a dog's leg that has had dewclaws properly removed then you should feel nothing but a slight bump under the skin where the digit was. The removal of the dewclaw can be controversial when talking to some groups. In working dogs, like Labradors, the "point" to removing is to disallow injury. If you leave the pad then that negates that point. The Animal Hospital I work at we remove dewclaws often and I have never seen a pad left. Maybe your Vet has a different procedure, but like I said the main argument to remove dewclaws is to disallow injury to the useless digit. If the pad is left then there is still a risk of injury.....you might as well have left everything there and saved your money. IMO

Yeah, the Carpal pad has nothing to do with the dewclaw. I was so confused at why someone would not remove the pad that is associated with the dewclaw....I thought that it one sh**** dewclaw removal by a Vet. Yeah, nothing you can do for the Carpal pad except wrap it and apply a triple antibiotic. It should heal quickly.

EMT gel. should be good to go in a couple of days. i would just keep an eye on it and keep it clean. if it continues to come open... geive her some time off, but I've used EMT gel on torn pads and had the dog back on the ground the next day without an issue.
