I am looking into purchasing an AR-15. I like the .223 caliber but I know very little and have no experience with this type of rifle. What should I look for? I plan to put on my own optics and light. I need input on all of the other options available. Thanks for the advice.

you can build one yourself for $600 plus shipping. But that would require a little work and firearm know-how but there are plenty of resources available on youtube etc to help with the build.
Basically buying a stripped lower for $100 and the palmetto armory build kit for $500.
I would highly suggest not buying a home built kit unless it was from one of the dealers on this site or others. Yes its not that hard but no one will stand behind a home built kit.
You can get decent factory build rifles in the $750-$900 depending on model and accessories.

Plum crazy complete lower from a vendor on THF from San Antonio: 125.00 DSA 300 AAC upper with med wt stainless barrel: 335.00 Bolt carrier group from CMMG: 100.00 Magazine - standard .223/5.56: 15.00 Ammo is showing up pretty cheap or reload your own by reforming .223 brass.
Total for a 300 AAC Blackout AR: 575 + shipping, transfer and tax = 30 cal hog killin machine.

I carry a gun because I'm too young to die, and too old to take a whoopin!

Who builds a good factory rifle for the money? You can get good DPMS buys at Cabelas. I bought the AR10 (308) for $1100.

Palmetto state armory has some good low price setups. I got a 16" carbine with a giesell trigger on black Friday weekend. I broke it in Saturday and took it hog hunt in Sunday evening. They have carbines starting at $599.99 if I'm not mistaken.

Well I just checked on Palmetto and they are sold out of their rifles at the moment. They will run some good sales but be prepared to wait a bit for your product as they build them as they are ordered.

This ! Only real reason to build it yourself IMO is if your wanting something pretty specifice spec wise or just want to know the ins and outs of your rifle and the satisfaction of doing it your self. Not sure about others but every upper that I build I stand by %100. In fact I built 2 for a guy and his friend from here and they brought them back claiming both were not accurate at all. I returned their money took the uppers out and I was getting under .75 moa without putting much effort. I sent them with a buddy shoots alot and they wound up to be .5 MOA uppers. I was happy they were accurate but was definately a little ticked at the situation...

We built several rifles for first timers, from mild to wild. AS MUCH as I love the .300 BLK, we have talked newbies into a 5.56/223. Mainly for cheap ammo and easy start up. BUY from some one local that will give you Quality service, and will stand behind their product! Build your 2nd or 3rd one let the AR guys do your first one. my.02 worth.
