Also i would like a good silencer what are the rules, and what brand ,is it worth having one... any info will help thanks for your tim, corey

This is interesting. I've wondered the same thing. I'm interested in reading replies. Thanks for posting

Good choice on the R25. What caliber?

I have one in .308 and it really puts them in the dirt. It's a bit heavy with the NV scope on it.

NV versus thermal is little like comparing apples and oranges. NV can only be used when it's dark, whereas thermal can be used during the day. If a hog steps behind a bush, you can no longer see him with a NV scope. He will still be emitting a heat signature and would be somewhat visible in a thermal scope.

Good NV is still less expensive than thermal. They do sell NV scopes that you attach forward of your day time scope. I think this is a good way to go if it isn't a dedicated hog gun. Also, you may not need a big dedicated NV scope to get the same results. I know of a lot of guys that use weapon mounted PVS-14 monoculars with an Eotech red dot scope and they slay hogs too.

Tons of options. Do a lot of research before you shell out any $$$$ Perhaps a good set of feeder lights and great glass is all you need on a rifle. I have killed a lot of hogs using a set of TB feeder lights in red with a plain old Pentax scope with a 50mm objective. Just something to consider.

If you can get your hands on a thermal scope for a good price and it isn't going to mean that your kids go without shoes, you should probably get one - BUT - it really depends on what kind of hunting you will be doing.

If you have a property where you're going to be still hunting at night or your stalking is going to yield a lot of long shots (as in, you're going to shoot at critters 100 yards away in the dark) I would say that you want gen3 with more magnification or a day/night setup that works off of your regular glass. If you're going to be doing a lot of disciplined, quiet, downwind stalks and getting really close then you want lower magnification. Thermal will really shine if you have a lot of cover on your property or a lot of wooded areas - either has a way blotting out anything in the background for NV, particularly when you use IR illumination.

I think you'll be equally effective (and happy) with either intensifier tube NV or thermal sights on your rifle, so in that sense I think that YES, good night vision is going to be just as good as $13,000 thermal. To me, the ideal setup would be a NV scope and a thermal monocular for scanning (it isn't necessarily good policy to scan with a device that sees coaxially with the barrel of your rifle).

Before you settle on a night vision or thermal device. Send me a email michael@westforkarmory.com We will beat any price! We also have the only Pulsar factory authorized below dealer cost night vision scopes. We will have them until they sell out.
