It seems as the gray ducks out number all the other ducks most of the season. I did have a few Green Wings and Mallards coming in, but now everything is gray- I'm not complaining. Is it because the population of Gadwalls are higher, or the other duck fly south or something else?

Also, I shot one this weekend that had a brown feather on the black part of the rump. Is that unusual or an older duck or ?

Thanks

The same thing has happened at my two holes. My opinion is that the early mix was the early arrivals and that these last fronts and pressure from hunters has pushed them out and we now the Gaddys to replace them thanks to the same fronts. Haven't seen many GW Teal yet. That's when we usually see lots of birds. However, this past opening week has been stellar, especially for the gads. I'm hunting south of Tyler. Does this match your sightings?

First of all, most of the Mallards are still way up north. With very little ice and snow so far north, there is no reason for large amounts of Mallards to come south. Secondly, you guys are in the central flyway. We are in the Miss. flyway over here. About 75% of all Mallards come down the Miss.flyway. We even have lower than average number of Mallards right now, so I imagine the central flyway has very low numbers. We are killing Mallards, but not near as many as we usually do. In one of my spots, Mallards usually make up about 90% of my kills. Needless to say, I'm not hunting that spot too much this season yet. Gadwalls tend to hang around way more than Mallards also. If some of you have never hunted southeast Ark. or N.E. Louisiana, you need to someday.

Had lots of GWT in the first split, but didn't hunt then as we were deer hunting. Have seen 0 since the split. Place I was on last year, I could have limited out on GWT every day at one pond. It was about 40 miles south from the lease now. There are more species on this lease compared to the last one.
