After carefull discussion last night over cigars and what the Irish term "The Creature" it became apparent that a number of personality types exist on just about any hunting club that has over 8 members. I'm sure you've met or known them all and some of you might even be these people.
The most prominent and best known is "The Drunk." Everybody has at least one and sometimes there are two. The drunk is usually early middle age, a closet alchoholic in the first place who really lets it rip at the lease. His blood alcohol rarely drops below 0.2 and he usually has a friend who is an enabler; the guy who drives them both up so he can drink in the car on the way up and back. The drunk is the focus of fun and entertainment but he's also a screwup and a source of conflict. He's the natural opponent of the next guy that I call " The Ramrod."

Yes I know both the "Drunk" and the "Ramrod" well. I'm sure I will know your others as well. Fun topic that will hit many close to home. smile

The freeloader seems to be our hunting groups biggest loser.

Also the lazy "I'm gonna ride my four wheeler wherever I wanna" guy....

There seems to also be one that is "anti bring a kid hunting".

And the "turn my kids loose to run wild on lease" guy. I love kids and take mine, but they stay with me and act right.

The "Ramrod" is the guy who A) Is in charge (if so's he is not or would ever be elected ) or B) thinks he's in charge. He is the direct opponent of " The Drunk " and they don't like each other. The Ramrod thinks he knows best about everything and everybody. He's essentially a legend in his own mind. He's often large and always loud. He also has a cute wife who absolutely wants him to go to the deer lease and stay as long as possible as long as he doesn't call or come home unexpectantly. If there is a second drunk, he's the bud of the Ramrod and acts as his gofer. He's usually stupid and owes his place on the lease to the Ramrod because he knows there always another gofer in the waiting.

What about the "Criticizer"? No deer you shoot would ever be worthy if him.

You mean "The Authority" don't you? But on the good side there's always " The Chef." He's the guy who can cook and everyone wants to know if he's coming up or not especially the Freeloader. Seconds as a good bartender too. Often of Cajun extraction, friendly and personable, but also sly as a fox because he gets what he wants. Usually best friends with " The handyman" who can fix just about anything. Both are indispensable members.

When I was a teenager living in Mississippi, our lease had an "Old Timer" that everyone enjoyed picking on. Of course it was always done in good natue because everyone knew that Jessie probably knew more about deer hunting and general wisdom than all of us put together. Like many old timers, Jessie came up the hard way, having made it through the Great Depression when he would walk miles every day to a nearby town to work on a WPA project.

Yes, there aren't too many true old timers still left who can relate what hard times really look like.

The most prominent and most troublesome on any lease are the "better than's / holier than thou's".

They sit around talking about the short comings of everyone else on the place and consider themselves better in some way.
The classify others into categories like lazy, drunk, ramrod, biologist, liar, sniper, know it all, freeloader, criticizer.

They never take action to improve lease harmony like simply removing those that aren't right for the lease because they enjoy lease drama as much as an insecure teenage girl lives for the drama created between their friends.
They don't move on to a new place because on any another lease or around another group of hunters the "better than's" find out they are one of those guys in one of those categories.

Then there is the most infamous. It's " The Outlaw", the guy who is going to do it illegally even if legal is better. He just can't help himself because if there is a rule it means it's something to break. Most of them are stealth outlaws too, have done it for years and move on a lot.

Dang, is there a blind guy? I don't see any of that in our 10 members. Maybe a fixer-upper guy, but then all of us are apt to be working on something to make the lease better somehow.

We have a couple that are seldom there, but they pay their money and work on workdays and provide materials and equipment; so they are not freeloaders.

We don't have a drunk, heck only 4 or 5 even drink. We're all close to the same age, no father figures. Everyone has something they take charge of voluntarily, so no ramrods;

Everyone pays up well, so no moochers.

Dang, we have such a boring camp it's amazing we have any fun at all.

Wow, do you have a prayer meeting too? Just kidding. The thread was meant for a bit of levity. Besides no one is perfect.

Well the guys I hunt with are just as boring...We have a preacher and I am the youngest of the group(43 yrs old). We usually are in bed by 9 or 9:30 and we have been known to take naps in afternoon. I guess our group is the preacher, the walker(cause he walks everywhere), the fixer upper and then I would be the worrier...hoping everyone is having a good time.

And then there's the Pet Coon. Well meaning and likeable, but everything he touches turns to crap. He isn't allowed to help with any of the chores other than dish washing.

BTW - Away from the lease, these guys are usually lawyers or accountants.

I have a very good friend who suits that mold. I've ordered him not to even look at anything that I own that has an engine in fear that it will no longer start. I believe the man could honestly break a crowbar.

We have a guy we call "Trump" he's not gonna do much work but he's got money for almost anything we need! We can deal with him!

We have another guy I started calling "Lucky" accident prone and just all around unlucky. If something bad is gonna happen 9 time out of 10 it happens to him. I'm glad he's there I used to be that guy.

Don’t forget about "trashy"
Leaves trash all over the camp and can usually be followed him home by the empty bags of deer corn blown all over the hwy.
