A beautiful heirloom black powder shotgun. I can't help you with origin or age, but she's something to be truly proud of!

if i remeber right they put alot of makers marks on the barell then hid it with the wood so its risky to try but you could take the barrels off and look at the underside of them
One side note, NEVER put an armadillo in a paper feed bag.

Definetely write down the history for the next heir.

Does anyone know of an appraiser in the Dallas that I might be able to take it to. Don't want to sell just trying to get info on it.

Go to Vegas to show Pawn Stars

Well since it belonged to your great great grandfather I would say it is priceless-at the very least to you. You are blessed to have it.
Not on topic for this post but it is sickening to me to see people on Pawn Stars bringing stuff that has been in their family for generations-and then SELLING IT! Often for a few hundred bucks!
I saw Rick buy a man's great great grandfather's Civil War diaries for a couple hundred bucks. If he had any class he should have bought them, asked for the name of the man's brother/sister,and when the sorry SOB asked why, said "So I can send it to them so it can remain where it belongs-in your family."
I learned long ago you can't reason someone out of something they don't reason themselves into.

Awesome looking gun, be careful if you decide to shoot it as it looks to be Damascus steel barrel shouldn't shoot modern loads through it. If it were me I'd hang on to it and pass it on to the next generation.

Point of ancestry: Original post said it belonged to his grandmother's great grandfather. That would make it Wreimer's Great great great grandfather!

Could it be an American made gun? That's a lot of "greats". You can buy a book named Flayderman's Guide to Antique American Firearms ($35) and it will help you identify the gun and give you an estimated value.

Thanks for the replies! I don't ever plan to sell it. About to have a son, due Christmas day, plan to pass along. Don't think I would ever try to shoot it, too scared. Would love to hang it from the mantle, but I need a mantel first, for that matter I also need a fireplace.
Talked to my grandmother tonight and said her great grandfather was born in 1816 and died 1886. His father was born 1770's. He was from Dickson County Tennessee. That's all she could tell me.

Percussion caps were patented in 1807. Shotguns weren't common till the 1850s.

According to my Flayderman's Guide (7th Edition), it looks like it has 'bar action' or 'front action' locks shown on page 607. The barrels most resemble the Skelp gun barrel design (Damascus) pictured on page 605. As noted, you would probably have to pull the barrels and look at their undersides near the breech for proof marks.
Even with a Flayderman's handy, without some indication of the maker it will be tough to identify that piece.
Good luck.
