Me, my brother, and our sons had an interesting hunt this evening. Not 20 min into the hunt I hear a shot from my brothers way. I am excited thinking my nephew just took his first deer, my brother text me and said he had to put an injured deer down. Well my 3yo son is not really in the mood to be in a deer stand so we pack up and head that way. After talking to my brother on the phone you can tell he is a little mad due to the deer being a young ten point we have been watching on game cam and one you have high hopes for in a few years if he sticks around. He says he spotted the deer in the brush and could tell something wasn't right by the way he dipped as he walked. Said it took him 10 min to cover 20 yards to get to the opening by the feeder. After we inspect him, his front left shoulder seemed to be broken and that whole leg is swollen double the size of the other one. Left side of rack is scratched and busted up as well. I have no idea how this deer was even walking. We assume he survived getting hit by a car, but there was no hair loss or road rash you would think he would have. Makes me wonder how long he has been this way. I told my brother he did the right thing, and glad he did what he did. I have no doubt the yotes would have caught up to this deer at some point.
Also this deer was shot with remington core lokt in .270 130 gr. 60 yards and no exit. We could not find the lead or anything in the deer so assume it just exploded inside. I haven't used this ammo in a few years but have in the past and never had one not exit a deer. Has anyone experienced this before?

If he wasn't hit by a car, maybe it was the result of fighting. Buck fights can be extremely agressive and even sometimes end in death.

Were his insides busted up (bruised, like a car hit)? Are you going to eat it? Might have fever or something, not sure I'd want to risk it.

Your brother did the right thing. Shame to hear that about a young buck with potential.
