Hey All-

I searched around before posting just to make sure I wasn't asking what someone else has already asked. I couldn't find anything, but I know the food plot topic is probably a dead horse by now. I apologize in advance if I didn't search well enough on this forum to find my answers.

The place I hunt is in Fort Bend County and my cousin and I are thinking about planting food plots for the first time.

I am looking for the best trade off between
1) Total cost of planting
2) Hardiness of the plant
3) Nutrition for the deer
4) Ease of the plant to grow

I would like to avoid the expensive seeds that require you to prep the soil. I have heard that soy beans, clover, turnip greens, and oats work well. Just wondering if anyone out there has tried a more readily available plant/seed and how well it did.

There has to be something out there we can plant that doesn't require a lot of money while still attracting the deer and providing nutrition.

we're laughing that the best food plot we have this year was an afterthought. We threw out a bunch of bird seed mix on unprepared ground (the kind of seed you put in the bird feeder in your backyard) and then ran the disc over it. Really, if it is tender and green, the deer will hammer it pretty hard.
