Just got back from the lease and I think I ended up with more pics this time than ever before. I cant post them all but here are a few of the better ones.

Day one I got to the lease and went out early to change the camera cards. I got lucky and found pigs at my dads feeder so I shouldered the AR 223 and droped one of them right in its tracks. Shortly after that it got up and took off realmad. Full story on that little failure was posted in the Rifles section the day it happend but to make a long story short I never found the pig. While looking for the pig I did find these 4 little sheds.

Day two I got to see PLENTY of fog! You wouldn’t know it by lookin at that picture but there are 2 feeders, 4 bucks and a mountain lost in that fog.

Day 4 a STRONG cold front blew in leaving me with only 2 places to hunt due to the north wind. One of those two spots rarely produces any pigs so I had to hunt what I call my “cliff stand”(not really a stand at all….just a small cliff where I sit on the ground). Really didn’t want to hunt there because one of the feeders is almost 300 yards away and with a 20mph wind I didn’t know if I could pull off that shot or not. Well I got my chance to find out when 3 pigs came in about 5:20pm. I leveled the cross hairs of the 300RUM a tad high on his shoulder and dropped the hammer on him. He crumpled right in his tracks! woot 180 grain Nosler Partition went through his right shoulder and blew out his neck leaving a bloody mess under my feeder. Not the biggest boar I have ever killed but I was dang sure proud of the shot.

Day 5 I got up to get something to drink during the night and opened the door to this! SNOW!!!!!!!!! banana When I went to bed they said any accumulations would be north of I-20……guess they missed that prediction by at least 60 miles. roflmao

Here are a few day time pics. Most of the snow had melted off the bare dirt areas by the time I took these pics. We had close to 3” on the raised surfaces but only about 1” stuck to the ground. Snow was much heavier on the south part of the ranch where the mountains are.

There is a red Honda 4-wheeler and a red pig under all that snow.

In the middle of this pic there are 2 deer.

Day 8 was awesome! Got to see 2 more Grey Foxes (no shots fired), 2 decent 8 points I had never seen before, a nice 11 point, and many other deer. That afternoon I climbed in one of my dads bow stands to see if any pigs would show up and sure enough they did. About 5:15pm the deer in the feeder looked back into the woods and then took off so I knew that could mean only one thing…..PIGS! Few seconds later a big black sow and about 12 mid size piglets came in to the feeder. I raised the Ruger 350 Rem Mag and took it off safety then put the cross hairs on the black sows shoulder and began to squeeze the trigger. Next sound I hear is CLICK……and then the pigs scattered. My mind starts going a million miles an hour trying to figure out what just happened. At first I thought maybe I forgot to chamber a round when I got in the stand, then I thought maybe I didn’t push the safety all the way to the fire position (M77-MKII’s have a 3 position safety). I waited a few seconds just in case it was a hang fire then began to open the bolt. There was a round in the chamber and a good dent in the primer. This was the first time in my life I had ever had a primer fail and yes it was factory Remington ammunition. Thankfully the pigs didn’t stay gone long and when they returned I had a fresh round in the chamber for them. First shot I took out the big black sow then I chambered my last round and threaded one through all the brush and smacked the little red one right in the neck (the damage was pretty dramatic) I usually don’t mess with the little piglets but I had to make sure my ammo was good to go you know grin. No doubt a day I will remember for a long time.

The failed round.

Here is the 11 point. Pic was taken through the binoculars so it’s a little blurry. He is just a 3 year old with a small kicker off his right G-2. He should be a heck of a nice buck next year with a little rain if everyone lays off the trigger.

Pic from one of my dads rifle stands.

Not sure how much more hunting I will get to do before the end of the season but its been fun. Never got a crack at the big boar I was after but maybe I can squeeze in another hunt before new years and try for him again.

Forgot about these pics. hammer

Day 6 I woke up to one of the coldest hunts of my life! Not sure what the temp was but it was COLD! After taking what I wanted off the pig I killed on day 4 I used the rest of him to make a predator pile near one of my stands. Just after day break I had this HUGE Grey Fox show up to feed on it. I have killed more Foxes than I can remember so the last several I have seen I didn’t even take a shot at. This one was different though due to his size. I have never had the urge to have a Fox mounted but this one was big and perfect so he has a date with the taxi. The story these 2 pics don’t tell is that the wind was blowing like crazy making camera focus almost impossible. I also lost my little green stocking hat I have on in those pics so if anyone finds it please return it to me.

Good pics! Looks like a primer failure to me on the misfire! Cut that piglet in half and put the whole thing on the smoker - yum! yum!

Looks like you had a good time. I'm pretty sure I've asked before, but this is in Coke county, right?

Nice pics. Looks like you take a lot of guns when you go hunting.

It is far more important to be able to hit the target than it is to haggle over who makes a weapon or who pulls a trigger.

Nice pics, JCB. From the looks of those pics looks like your not to far from Bronte. Love it when it snows in the Big Country.
