Just back from my first trip to Texas having hunted land in Irion County. What rugged land. Learned real quick to not grab the legs of the deer without first looking for cactus spines. We were able to rattle up some bucks as they were really active. Surprised at how small the deer bodies were compared to out east. Mature bucks were about 100 lb dressed and does 50-60 lbs dressed. Was told they were additionally down due to harsh drought conditions. Saw more bucks than I had seen in 20 years and got an education on how an individual can manage a population of deer even under open range conditions and have an impact. Never thought I would pass on a 10 pt buck before. Had an incredible time. Lot can be learned on how they do things in Texas. Saw a fair amount of bucks with broken antlers. Wonder if the drought caused the antlers to be more brittle. While waiting for the crop duster plane ride from San Angelo to Dallas I had asked this kid (early 20's) how he did. He flipped open his iphone and showed me a picture of this huge racked buck he described as 190 class he shot with a bow and then flipped to a picture he said of his dads deer which was wider and bigger. We did not see any animals like that where we hunted and if we did that would make the news! Had a great time in Texas, good people , good hunting, good BBQ and a good beer that began with an S but escapes me now.

Glad you enjoyed it. Good hunting in that area.

I'd imagine the beer was Shiner.
