can anyone give me a good idea as to how much meat I'll be dropping off at the processor's? i'm trying to guestimate the processing costs. we'll skin and quarter the elk cow. presume the cow's mature, has been fed well and is in good, healthy shape. thanks!

you should check with the processor you plan to use.
mine in junction actually prefers you not quarter them out.
he charges around $150 for a cow and you get around 250 to 300lbs of steaks and burger from a 500 lb range cow.

if you will be in kerrville area, Rhodes Brothers is good for processing as well as taxidermy. they make some great sausage too.

Stuff my dad said in the deer blind

"I can dive deeper and come up drier"
"did you do that?"

Around 200 lbs of pure meat from a 400 pound carcass. That would be a really big cow elk. Most will weigh around 300 skinned carcass weight and yeild 50% being 150 pounds.

The last one I shot for myself netted 153 pounds of little white packages. I used Rhodes in Kerrville and they never disappoint. Good, ethical processor. Expect the processed weight to be about half of the dressed weight.
