What's the best choke tube for a Remington 870?
I am mostly shooting ducks over the decoys. I typically like to shoot the remington hypersonic shells, #2.
I have no idea what the difference is in the chokes. I am currently just using the one that came with it.
Any help is much appreciated...

Jager is like liquid xanax. Wake up looking like you fell in a tiger exhibit and crawled through a leech filled swamp to get out.

Go with an IC based upon what you are telling us. You really need to pattern your gun to see how the patterns look but normally if you try and over choke the hypersonics they will blow the pattern out.
Good luck.

How the heck can I "pattern" my gun without dropping a buttload of money on all the different chokes?

Can anyone explain the different chokes to me. i.e. what each choke does...
I dont know anything about chokes. So I really dont even know what "overchoking" is.
Thanks

Click here and read This should help a little. Personally I stick with the modified the gun came with. For bird hunting over decoys, most will stick with IM, M, or IC. Good luck.

I just bought one the tru glo adjustable chokes at cabelas in the bargain cave. We shall see how this works. My buddy bought one a couple years ago and seems to like it just fine. Would be nice to switch to full choke if need be. Anyone have any feedback on this one?

How the heck can I "pattern" my gun without dropping a buttload of money on all the different chokes? Its easy! You put the chokes in that came with the gun and you shoot a paper target with a 30 inch circle drawn on it at 30 yards. Get the number of pellets in each shell off of the box the shells came in. After shooting the paper count the pellet strikes in the circle. If your shells hold 100 pellets then to pass the test you should have at least 75 of the 100 pellets in the circle.

How the heck can I "pattern" my gun without dropping a buttload of money on all the different chokes? Okay...you decided on which shell you wanna shoot already. Now go take a look at 30 or 40 yards at what the pattern will be with the two chokes you have (mod and IC). You will probably find something in those two you like. If not then switch shells or buy an aftermarket choke and try it again. Carleson's makes great chokes at very affordable prices. They are a good company to do business with and they also have a 3d patterning machine so they are actually looking at shot strings. Call and talk to them they will probably share some info and even give you a much better head start than I can.

Make sure you buy some chokelube and lube your chokes. After the season pull your chokes out.
I have my beretta that stayed in the garage too long and the choke is stuck in there, same thing happened to my 870, i had to buy a new barrel for my 870. As far as chokes i would use ic. As far as loads, i would not hunt with hypersonics, at 1700 fps, they are too fast and a bad load to start with, since you will not learn to lead the bird and swing the gun. Start with cheaper and at around 1400 fps

Ok guys, the choke that was in it already was the mod.
I went to academy and bought a 2 pack that had a imp. cyl. and a full.
I wont have time to pattern them. I live in the suburbs (can't shoot my gun there.)
Which choke would you go with?

Do not shoot that full choke with steel. You can bulge or even split the barrel.
Mod or IC is going to be your two best bets. I said IC before based upon what you told us about liking to shoot them feet down in the decoys, I'll stick with that.

Rob I loved to shoot them dern turkeys when I was a kid. We had 1200 acres twix Menard and El Dorado Texas. I had a dirt bike and I was truly free to be a kid. I had the old lynch's box callers and diaphram calls. There were groups of turkeys that numebred in the 100s. Come spring you could hit the call and exoect to hear a gobble in return. Nobody out there ever hunted them other than shooting them under a feeder during deer season. There is something about calling in a bird and seeing him all puffed up, vibrating his wings and gobbling. They sound like thunder at 20 yards. Man that was fun! Thank you for posting that pic of the bird and slate call.

Something that might be of interest: Meaning do not shoot over an IM and expect your barrel to digest it very long.

I ended up using the imp. cylinder.
I had a modified in already.
I got my first ever limit this weekend and my first goose. I had a great time and I think I found my new favorite choke and ammo combo.
I couldnt find any of my hypersonics so I went with the blackclouds. #3. 1 1/8th oz. 1635fps. With the flightstopper pellets. I am a believer in those now.
The best part was that I got them for 17.50 a box when buying bulk from rogers. and the free shipping is awesome.
