Saw this deer on the game cam with a arrow in him. The wound has since got very infected. My wife is a RN she suggested not eating this deer if it is taken. She is concerned about blood bourne infection. I know cooking the meat would kill anything bad. Should I take this deer? Any survival stories on such a wound? Any opinions on this?

That sucks. If he is all nasty and infected I would be leary about eating him as well. That said deer are tuff critters, if he is still alive he very well may get over it. If he is still going to food and water he has a better chance. To me when they quit going to food and water is when they are done.
If your not gonna eat him even if you shoot him I say let nature take its course, he may very well live if he has already made it a couple weeks. Swelling puss and oozing stuff is all natural parts of healing and fighting infection. If he is still eating and drinking I would let him make a go of it.

If you take him now I advise not eating him.
I agree with redchevy though. Deer are tough creatures, if he's still coming to the feeder and the waterin' hole I recommend letting nature take its course. If he is too sick to make it then coyotes will get him, but if he has the reserves he might pull through. He won't survive a bullet though.

If it looks good, eat it.
Rocks are cool, also kittens.

This is quite a predicament for me. Saw him this morning and passed. Maybe wrong but I would rather have him than the coyotes. But I was raised in the fashion don’t shoot it if you are not going to eat it. I can’t see popping him just for the heck of it. I have not taken anything all year. Suspect it is due to the drought. The only photo’s he has given me has been of the left. If I saw the broad head exit I would feel better.

I would let nature takes is course, seen a doe live through a shot just like that before, but the arrow went all the way through, not sure that really mattered though.

It won't heal with the arrow in. If the tip broke, it might come out, and the deer might make it. I don't think there is a wrong answer. Shooting it would put it out of its misery (like a dog), but I don't think letting the deer have a chance is the wrong answer, either.

If your going to take it you might think about letting a kid trying to get their first buck take him, just a thought.

I would let nature takes is course, Since when is an arrow sticking out of a deer natural? The arrow will most likely come out and the deer will live. They are are very tough critters. We had one a couple years back that had an arrow in it for three weeks before it came out and that deer came to the feeder everynight, he made it just fine.

One of my buddies hunts a smaller place with lots of bowhunting near by. He has shot several hogs with healed over pieces of arrows and one or two deer as well. They dont all live but some do.
Last year our star buck showed up with a bum leg 3.5 year old and we thought about shooting him... seeing him this year makes me sooooo glad we let him try to make it.
If you arent going to eat him anyway then you would be shooting him solely for the horns, and its not like he is a massive non-typical or book deer, give him a shot to live.

From that picture he looks to be doing ok with it arrow I say let him go if he lives no harm no foul if he dies from infection then you didnt "waste a tag" and still no harm no foul. It's survival of the fittest. RIGHT???????

I wouldn't eat the immediately infected area, but I doubt the whole deer is ruined. It might be a good idea to contact a biologist and/or game warden before you do anything. Sucks for that deer though.
