I'm new to hunting. My son wanted to go, so we headed out with my girlfriends uncle. We saw alot of what we belived to be rubs but are not sure. I know we are way late in the game still went out to put out a feeder. We sat out for three hours and only saw one big body 6 pointer. Now Looking at the rubs i not think that 6 pointer could of made them. What do you think? these are all over the place some fresher then others these are just a couple.

Doesn't look like a rub to me.

I dont think so. I have never seen a rub on a tree that thorny. Looks too high off the ground to be a rub to me, probably just dead and bark falling off.

No sir.

They will catch your eye though. I saw the same thing on the same plant in Terrell county a couple weeks ago. At closer inspection it proved just to be the plant trying to regrow. Almost like shedding its dead layer.

They are also some smaller green ones in the canyon. There are no trees out there. It's in Val Verde county. I am pretty sure a animal did this cause the damage is usally only on one side and is not uniform. Maybe something chewed on it? I have no clue.

I don't think they are deer rubs... maybe cows but not deer.

No cows on the property. I'm not familiar with the land out there as far as its plants and animals. Some of those plants that were dead were knocked to the ground and tore up. Does anyone know the name of the plant?

When you see a rub, usually it is unmistakable... 2-3 feet off ground and 1-2 feet in length.

I'm not sure if deer use Ocotillo to rub their antlers on(too spiny),The fact that you saw a buck is proof that there are deer there.Val Verde cty has some great hunting, not sure what the drought has done to the herd though.

Do you have goats out there? Either livestock goats or some type of wild goats? Looks like a goat rub to me. My goats rub on bushes like that and will rub all over locust thorn trees. They really get into rubbing their horns as they go into rut.

no for sure, if it was a rub the deer would still be tangled up in all that mess.
Would make a good crappie brush pile though

Thanks for the name. I did some searching and the deer do use them. I'm still looking for some pic to compare.

Good point, I did see goats roaming there three years ago. I haven't seen any since. Thanks for the info.

it's possible, I've seen a buck completely tear up a small mesquite tree right coming out of velvet.

gonna hide out in the bottoms, where i hunted deer and turkey, i know that swamp like the back of my hand-Chris Knight
