My 2 year old Weim broke out on Monday night of last week around midnight. I woke up to him scratching like crazy. I decided it looked like an allergy/hive so I gave him 25mg of Benadryl. The itching seemed to diminish but the hives worsened, around 1 A.M. I called the emergency vet to ask for an opinion. I was told to give him 25mg more Benadryl and be on alert for Anaphyllaxis. Luckily his breathing was fine and heartbeat was regular. Same thing has happened almost nightly since, between 8 P.M. and midnight he has "breakouts" of similar proportion all over his chest, legs, and face. Sometimes inside of his ears and around his neck. I have almost completely quit worrying about anaphyllaxis but I am still concerned I might see a severe outbreak with throat swelling or something of the likeness. I monitor him closely as much as I can. Daytime breakouts have not been regular but it has happened once or twice. I have NOT changed laundry detergent, soaps, dryer sheets...NO NEW blankets or furniture...He has ALWAYS drank tap water and still does. HAVE NOT changed dog foods or treats. What do yall think? Here are some pics: Recently (since this morning) he has developed scabs on his face where he scratches frequently and between his shoulder and ribs where his leg rubs. I am worried about infection. What are your opinions on this? Thanks All! ac

Have you taken him in to the vet for them to see? Have you put anything in the yard like fertilizer, sod, mulch, new plants, etc? How old is he?

Woops missed the first couple words that say his age! Haha. Does this reaction seem to occur after he has been in the yard? I would check the yard for any new critters that may have come around that could be causing trouble. Or plants he may be eating. I had a dog come in from the yard with a similar reaction, couldn't find anything in the yard, and gave her Benedryl to help with itching. She was a fine after benedryl and haasnt had a recurrence. Because it's coming back I would think it is something he's getting into repeatively.

Not quite as bad but had one that would breakout in a rash like that when she would chew on the aloe vera plants in the backyard. We had to moved all the plants to the from yard.
Shopping with your husband is like hunting with the game warden. Experience is what you get, when you didn't get what you wanted.

Something else, have you changed detergents that his bedding might be washed with?
Also check where he sleeps, could there be some kind of critter there causing the issue, try cleaning there?
Try to take an inventory of everything he could come into contact with or ingest and see if anything has changed or has become new.

Weims have very sensitive skin!!! My vet told me that when I wash mine to use and oatmeal soap or something for sensitive skin.
Maybe a new air freshener or candle close to his sleeping spot or a new scent he may not like or the scent not like him.

Since it is nightly are you giving him treats at night?
Do you go for walks at night before the break out?
Do you feed him once or twice a day? Same thing both times?

I just took my border collie mix to the vet this morning with a similar looking rash. they think it was a reaction to a flea bite and prescribed temaril P which is a steroid. The redness has seemed to subside after just 1 day. He did say that if any of the spots start to scab to bring him back for antibiotics as this could create other problems.
Has your dog had any fleas lately? May have been a bite.
